Should I get a patent lawyer or do it myself?
    #4600151 -

I have something that, by the USPTO's standards, warrants a design patent. Should I get a patent lawyer to guide me through this, or would it be a waste of money. I believe this product would be a very good seller, and a friend and I are in the process of finding someone to manufacture a prototype for us. Anybody here have any experience with this kinda stuff?

I'll ask my dad at dinner tonight, he and a friend were working on a more efficient cigar humidifier thermometer.

Yes tell all!

But yeah if you think it's worth it, get a patent agent or lawyer or whatever, or you could just do it yourself...the only thing that they do AFAIK (and I don't know much) is to search through all other patents to see if they can find a similar product already patented, and get the forms and stuff you need.

In all honesty, it would probably be more economical to do it yourself.

you'll really really struggle without a lawyer. Really struggle. Like probably not possible by yourself. Any one word or phrase goes wrong and it'll get rejected no matter how great an idea it is. I've written 6 patent applications, and even with major industrial lawyers at my disposal, only 3 got accepted.

If what you want is a utitlity patent - a patent for a device, method of manufacture, chemical compound etc., get a lawyer. If what you want is a design patent, that is a different animal entirely and does not require the hyper anal and obscure claim drafting of the utility patent. You could probably do a design patent yourself. Although you will still need to hire a draftsman to draw the pictures.

PM me your idea and I'll let you know if you need a lawyer or not.
