anybody have a patent on something or know a bit about the process?

if i have an idea, but no way to make it work can i get a patent for the idea and then pitch it to a company who would invest in research and developement until they've got it right? or do i need a blueprint, so to speak, or a design for the invention?

also, how much do patents cost...i found no usefull info on the patent office website.

basically... you need a few things to be able to get a company to invest in it.. will it sell? is the first question.. or is it functional?.. you usually need a working prototype in order to get someone interested. Though I do think you can patent a blueprint or design just the same.
then you have to write the patent yourself, or hire someone to write it for you. basically if your invention or idea can potentially make good money, hire a patent lawyer.
