can you patent an idea? or only inventions?

Came up with a rather simple idea while on mushrooms, the technology to do this certainly exists as of late atleast. A simple idea but to follow through will be a extremely difficult for me! it would certainly help if I new anything about holograms haha. So yes anyways can you patent an idea or only inventions? I suppose I would not be inventing anything ..just something different to do with holograms (hasnt but done as of yet to my knowledge) which could be helpful in ways. My idea isn't super amazing , infact it sounds kind of ridiculous but who knows right? It could work out!

Yes, you can. Apple patented rounded corners on their phones. You can patent fucking anything.

It doesn't even have to work. You can get a patent for traveling through time by sticking pencils up your nose and shouting "Where's my leiderhosen!"

It's more a matter of how cost effective it would be to patent your idea. Patents usually cost at least $5000-$10000.

Right on, thanks for the letting me know man! I guess indeed all I need to worry about is that cash amount, yikes! I will have to come back here and let you guys know how much it costs & then what my idea is.

You cant patent anything...

For something to be patentable it must be Non Obvious, be Novel and have Utility. The obviousness bar is very often a difficult hurdle to get over when attempting to patent something. The non-obvious cause refers to 'non-obvious to someone trained in the art'. That is an expert in the field of invention.

As far as patenting ideas... I believe that the patent offices require an idea be reduced to practice. That is, that the patentable invention be made in form and function, or at least have detailed diagrams of the invention.
