Question about my incubation terrarium
    #1605586 -

I made a incubation terrarium out of a rubermaid container with a heat pad (set on med.) on the bottom and a towel over it. the jars sitting on top of the towel. The temp is 84 degrees F but i also have a speaker in that rubermaid container that i use to stash my dry shrooms in. i just wanted to know will my speaker cause contamination while my jars are colonizing?

why do you have a speaker in there? Do you play beethoven for the shrooms?

I'd take anything not needed out of the terrarium. Unless your speaker, dried shrooms, and ziploc baggie are pretty sterile, it's not worth the risk.

An incubator is a totally contaminated place. Unless you only open it in front of a flow hood or inside a glove box, its covered in billions of contaminants. I wouldn't worry about it unless the jars aren't sealed well. Though the question still remains as to why you would hide something inside a speaker right next to incubating cakes. Doesn't seem that hidden to me :-)

As for contams, I wouldn't worry too much. An incubator is not meant to be sterile at all. The jars should be sealed at only opened in sterile conditions. While sealed you shouldn't have to worry too much about what they are exposed too as long as its not extreme. Massive amounts of spores could cause a hassle, not that they will sneak into the jars but that the heavy load will be there when you want to open the jars. So loading the air and general vacinity up with spores is not a good idea in general. It just raises your odds of contam. Inside the jars though things should be relatively safe.

Another question I have is after I inject my spores should I reseal the holes with masking tape and put the aluminum foil back over the lids?

Yes reseal with tape AND put the foil back on. The foil may be overkill but it can't hurt. You can leave off the tape if you fasten the foil on somehow, with a rubberband for instance. That would allow a small amount of air exchange while keeping contams from getting in. Remember - contams like to fall into things. They wont, in general, climb the sides of your jars. They fall from above on particals or dust, etc. So having the open hole covered with foil would be good protection as long as the foil doesn't move much, causing air to be sucked in. For the truly paranoid, use tape and foil. If you are cafeful and clean, use just foil with a rubberband.

If your jars are closed, you could throw them in your fucking toilet and it wouldn't do anything at all. I wouldn't worry about it.
