I agree with everything you said.  The severity of it was excessive.  I don't think they would've fessed up about it fresh off a super bowl victory.  But yeah it would've been the right thing.  I don't blame SP for wanting to save face for his team, that's totally understandable.  The thing that pissed me off was I remember watching the nfc title game and thinking "wow, they really are hitting Favre alot after he throws."  And then to watch recaps and seeing Saints players high five-ing and celebrating when Favre was struggling to get up and limping off the field.  And then to find out ppl had put up financial incentives...you can understand why people are so angry at the Saints.

The more reasonable among us knows that the Saints have done wrong. The organized pay for performance system was wrong. The coaches should have stayed out of it. The cover up is inexcusable. They should have fessed up in 2009 and the pattern of misleading must be delt with. Remember, SP and the team have admitted to all of this, so the "there is no proof" argument has no merit anymore.

Sanctions are warranted here and I think most of us agree on that. A fine, loss of draft choices, and reasonable suspensions for the guilty...i think we can all agree that the saints deserve that.

A full year for the head coach is totally excessive. It is totally reasonable to strenuously object to the length of the suspension for SP. To say that that sanction is unreasonable and vindictive is not to deny the team's guilt. It is also totally reasonable to question the motives of the league and the commissioner since further investigation into similar behavior of the other 31 teams will not occur.

dont get me wrong, i think the saints have done wrong. the most inexcusable thing was the cover-up. I dont think two 2nd round picks is reasonable, but yes, a fine, some suspensions.... all good and what i was expecting.
But what I keep trying to get across to many of you is that making a bounty does not mean people were trying to go outside of the rules of tackling to make an injury. you can try to make revisionist history and think that the 2 RTP calls against the saints were malicious, but go back and watch them and they are mild compared to any other RTP in the NFL.
the problem with most of your logic is that you believe the saints said "hey mccray, here is 20k to hurt favre" rather than the reality  of "first person to hit favre so hard (legally) that he sits on the bench wins the money pool". it wasnt incentive to play dirty, but rather incentive to hit someone as hard as you could.
which may have had its own unfathomed consequences, such as players lunging from further away, creating late hits, albeit unavoidable due to newtonian physics. I personally do not believe that any saints player went after some measly bounty with the intent to break rules in order to hurt another player. You and I both hope that whatever team we are routing for has players that are trying to put the biggest hit on someone that they can, if they arent, they are half assing it, and that isnt NFL football.

what annoys me more than the punishment, is all the "dirty" talk. it is misleading and just plain stupid. the saints didnt play dirty, maybe immorally, but not dirty.

Ha, that's great.

Just gotta chime in and agree with what seems to be the consensus that Payton's punishment is excessive and vindictive, but really (now that I've had time to digest it all, and get past my initial knee-jerk, "FUCK YOU ASSHOLE GOODELL" reaction), I am way more pissed at Payton/Loomis/Williams for perpetuating what would have been a slap on the wrist had they not so arrogantly and blatantly lied and covered up the whole mess.

There are a million t-shirt shops in Nola now that sell the "Free Payton" shirts, and it's absolutely ridiculous.  The dude willfully lied to the NFL about the team continually breaking a specific rule.  It doesn't matter that other teams do it, that is a retarded and childish excuse.  It doesn't matter that defensive players on any team try to hit as hard as they can regardless of extra-contractual bonuses.

Payton as head coach is responsible for the actions of his team.  They broke the rules, and they lied about it.  No getting around that.

I do not believe for a minute that this will totally diminish the Saints contention this season.  In fact at this point, I'll bet that Pete Carmichael steps the fuck up and the Saint's get deep into the playoffs, essentially stamping the ticket for Payton's exit from New Orleans.  I love coach Payton, but his arrogance and lies have cost us pretty dearly.

Oh and please God do not let them hire Tuna, and please, please God leave Spagnulo on defense, clearly that is where he belongs.

So word is the Saints are trying to lure Parcells out of retirement to act as the interim HC until Peyton returns.

If Parcells does take the job he'll have to wait five years after he gives back the throne to Payton to get into the HOF. That might be a deterrent... ?

Jesus god, leave Parcells to his golf games.  The man is 71 years old and hasn't coached a championship team in, what, 20 years?  He'd be a great consultant, but leave the young men's work to the young men.

Pete Carmichael knows the system and between him and Vitt (minus Vitt's 6 week absence to start the season), they can keep a hand on the wheel and steer the team to the playoffs, no problem.  Payton will likely appeal his sentence, which will earn him a few more weeks to hammer out long term plans for the season.  Get these in-house guys going, for the love of all that is holy GIVE BREES WHATEVER THE FUCK HE WANTS, sign him, and move on with our late round draft picks.  Loomis isn't gone until the season starts, and he and his team are GREAT at finding late rounders who kick ass.

Once this season gets going, all the talk of these penalties 'debilitating the Saints' will melt away as everyone realizes that the Saints are still a great fucking team, even with the Coach forced to watch from home.

Oh and if they really want to take someone out of retirement to coach for a year call up Dungy.

dungy is the opposite of what the saints are. the saints are one of, if not the only, team that has made the overly ballsy plays that you only hear about working in 1908 or some shit.
Dungy is way to safe of a coach.

anyway, I have decided to look on the bright side regarding all this:
1) any team the saints beat should feel like shit for getting beat by a team with one hand tied behind its back.
2) any team that beats the saints dont have much to celebrate about.
3) I think Sean Payton is going to be scary come the following season. a relatively young coach that has been considered a methodical genius and mastermind, sitting on his couch for a year, with nothing to do but get better..... he is going to come into the 2013 season with a new playbook.

Yeah, I was being somewhat facetious about Dungy.

Payton will always kick ass, the dude is an awesome fucking coach.  But I don't think watching from home will necessarily make him better, that comes from experience;  I do think that having a chip on his shoulder will definitely make him more dangerous.

I too, though, cannot wait to see Goodell have to hand over the Lombardi trophy this year to whoever wears the HC hat, and in 2013 or 14 to his new arch-nemesis, Payton.  He can impose whatever handicaps he want, but the Saints are still going to win.

the saints wont win the superbowl this year. I think they will make the playoffs, which in itself is a big middle finger to Goodell. the saints have a ridiculously tough schedule this year, and while the offense can still put up 30 points against any team, our defense coupled with the suspensions and lack of depth at most areas is going to allow 30 points from any team.

plus I forsee an inordinate amount of no-call penalties for the saints, as well as more BS calls on the saints.

Keep in mind they haven't even released player suspensions yet.  Don't go making those overzealous predictions just yet.

Oh boy those weren't predictions, those were hopes.  I wouldn't put my money on the Saints quite yet.
