Sean Taylor in Critical Condition After Shooting

This is not good. Looks like it may have been personal. Also, it happened very close to my house.
PALMETTO BAY, Fla. -- Washington Redskins star safety Sean Taylor was in critical condition Monday after surgery for a gunshot wound to his leg during what police are investigating as a possible armed robbery at his home.
The 24-year-old player was in the intensive care unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital after several hours of surgery, said family friend Richard Sharpstein, his former lawyer. Taylor lost a "significant" amount of blood because the bullet damaged his femoral artery, Sharpstein said.
Doctors are worried the blood loss might affect blood flow to the brain, said Sharpstein, who was at the hospital with Taylor's family and friends.
In a story posted on The Washington Post's Web site, Sharpstein characterized Taylor as "nonresponsive and unconscious."
"Right now he's clinging to life and we're all praying he makes it," Sharpstein said, according to The Post.
Officers were sent to Taylor's home at about 1:45 a.m. after his girlfriend called 911 and said he was shot in his lower body, Lt. Nancy Perez said. Taylor had missed the last two games because of a knee injury and was at home recuperating. Taylor was airlifted to the hospital.
Investigators were still interviewing the girlfriend and other relatives who were in the home to try to determine what happened, Perez said. No arrests have been made.
"It could have been a possible burglary; it could have been a possible robbery," Perez said. "It has not been confirmed as yet."
Sharpstein said Taylor's girlfriend told him the couple was awakened by loud noises, and Taylor grabbed a machete he keeps in the bedroom for protection. Someone then broke through the bedroom door and fired two shots, one missing and one hitting Taylor, the lawyer said.
"It was clearly a burglary, an armed burglary," Sharpstein said, adding nothing appeared to have been stolen.
The shooting happened at a home Taylor bought two years ago in the Miami suburb of Palmetto Bay. The player is in his fourth season with the Redskins after playing at the University of Miami, where he was an All-American in 2003. Despite his injury, he is tied for the NFC lead with five interceptions.
In Ashburn, Va., Redskins owner Dan Snyder said he was headed to Miami on his private plane, joined by running back Clinton Portis, vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato and trainer Bubba Tyer.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to Sean and his family. ... We appreciate very, very much the outcry of support," Snyder said.
Redskins safety Pierson Prioleau fought to keep his composure.
"This is not just a member of the Washington Redskins," said Prioleau, one of a few players made available to reporters. "But we're talking about a dad, a brother, a friend of ours, and that's where we're at with this right now."
Coach Joe Gibbs was joined by the team chaplain at the Redskins' usual Monday meeting. A small group of players held a separate prayer gathering.
The Redskins (5-6) lost 19-13 at Tampa on Sunday. Taylor did not travel with the team to the game because of his injury. Taylor sprained a ligament in his right knee in the second half of the Nov. 11 loss to Philadelphia. He was expected to miss at least two games.
Known as one of the NFL's hardest hitters, Taylor played in his first Pro Bowl last season, where he drew attention by leveling the other team's punter in what is usually a well-mannered exhibition game. Even though he has missed two games, his five interceptions remained tied for most in the NFC.
Taylor has been in trouble numerous times since he was drafted as the No. 5 overall pick in 2004. He has been fined at least seven times during his professional career for late hits and other infractions, including a $17,000 penalty for spitting in the face of Tampa Bay running back Michael Pittman during a playoff game in January 2006. He also was fined $25,000 for skipping a mandatory rookie symposium shortly after he was drafted.
Redskins coaches and players have defended Taylor, saying he was smart and misunderstood. Taylor has been slow to let anyone in his inner circle. He has rarely spoken to reporters, saying he does not trust them. Teammates said he became more mature over the last year after he became a father for the first time.
In 2005, Taylor was accused of brandishing a gun at a man and repeatedly hitting him during a fight that broke out after Taylor and some friends went looking for the people who had allegedly stolen his all-terrain vehicles.
Taylor reached a deal with prosecutors last year after they agreed to drop felony charges against him. He pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors in the assault case and was sentenced to 18 months probation. The pleas prompted another fine from the NFL but kept his football career intact.
He also was ordered to talk about the importance of education at 10 Miami schools and had to contribute $1,000 for scholarships to each of those schools.
The man Taylor allegedly hit, Ryan Hill, sued, seeking at least $15,000 in damages. Hill sustained bruises to his body, incurred medical expenses and lost wages because of the fight, the lawsuit said.

What about a home security system? Maybe a body guard? I heard that he was "robbed" about a week ago also. Whatever. It's obvious that he's got some people gunning for him. Who gets robbed twice in 8 days?? Can't this guy afford to pay a homie some $$ that wouldn't be crap to him to at least scare off his rivals??
It's sad I suppose, but it's not like this dude was an angel.
Just wait until we find out it was PacMan Jones who capped him.... THEN the poop will hit the fan

They think they caught the people who did it.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22009119/
MIAMI - Police said two men and two juveniles arrested Friday in the shooting death of Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor went to his home intent on stealing, not killing.
The suspects didn’t expect Taylor to be there, said Miami-Dade County police Director Robert Parker, but Taylor was recuperating from a knee injury and had returned home from Washington. When Taylor surprised them, he was shot.
“They were certainly not looking to go there and kill anyone,” Parker said. “They were expecting a residence that was not occupied. So murder or shooting someone was not their initial motive.” Story continues below ↓advertisement
Police spokeswoman Linda O’Brien identified the four suspects as: Venjah K. Hunte, 20; Eric Rivera Jr., 17; Jason Scott Mitchell, 17; and Charles Kendrick Lee Wardlow, 18. O’Brien said the charges for each had not yet been determined, but “we are talking murder and burglary.”
Authorities said they had more than one confession, but Parker would not elaborate.
The four were arrested Friday in southwest Florida, about 100 miles from Miami. They will be booked into the Lee County Jail and eventually will be returned to Miami, O’Brien said. She did not have any information on when they would appear in court, their hometowns or if they had attorneys.
Janelle Hall, a spokeswoman for Miami-Dade County jail, said security reasons prevented her from releasing information regarding when the suspects would be transferred to Miami.
The 24-year-old Pro Bowl safety died Tuesday, one day after being shot at his home in an affluent Miami suburb during what officials said appeared to be an attempted burglary.
Police have been investigating a possible link to a Nov. 17 break-in at Taylor’s home, during which they said someone pried open a front window, rifled through drawers and left a kitchen knife on a bed.
“We’re looking into whether or not one or more of the individuals had been at the residence before,” Parker said.
Family friend Richard Sharpstein said at least one of the suspects was at Taylor’s house when his sister recently had a party, but that Taylor did not know the men.
“It’s a burglary, and they targeted him for his wealth,” said Sharpstein, who’s Taylor’s former attorney. “It makes his death even more pathetic unnecessary and just, actually disgusting.”
Sharpstein had not spoken with Taylor’s family regarding the arrests, but said he doubted it provided any comfort.
“I know they are just saddened and appalled. The fact that they arrested his killer is no comfort to them,” he said. “It probably inflames them more, because it tells them people were trying to steal from him.
“They are murderers. They should be treated like murderers and put in the Miami River and floated away.”
The Miami Herald reported on its Web site that Mitchell and Wardlow had connections to Taylor. Mitchell cut Taylor’s lawn and did other chores at the house, Mitchell’s twin brother, Scottie, told the paper. Taylor’s sister, Sasha Johnson, dates Wardlow’s older cousin Christopher, and Scottie Mitchell told the paper the couple invited Jason Mitchell to Johnson’s birthday party within the past two months.
A woman who identified herself as Jason Mitchell’s mother told the Naples Daily News her son was at a birthday party at Sean Taylor’s home a couple months ago. She also said her son was at home all week and last weekend.
“I don’t know where he’s at, I don’t know why he’s being held,” she told the Naples paper. “No parent should see this happen to their child.”
O’Brien would not confirm the reports when contacted by The Associated Press.
Taylor and longtime girlfriend, Jackie Garcia, were awakened early Monday by loud noises at Taylor’s home in an affluent Miami suburb. Taylor grabbed a machete he keeps in the bedroom for protection, Sharpstein said. Someone broke through the bedroom door and fired two shots, one missing and one hitting Taylor in the upper leg. Neither the couple’s 18-month-old daughter, also named Jackie, nor Garcia were injured.
The bullet damaged the femoral artery in Taylor’s leg, causing significant blood loss. Taylor never regained consciousness and died a little more than 24 hours later.
A public viewing for Taylor is scheduled Sunday in Miami, and the entire Redskins organization plans to fly to Florida to attend Monday’s funeral at Pharmed Arena at Florida International University.
The Redskins also announced that fans attending Sunday’s game will receive a towel with Taylor’s No.21 jersey on it, and his name will be displayed prominently in one end zone.
Redskins owner Dan Snyder said the team will contribute a minimum of $500,000 to a fund to benefit Taylor’s daughter, and he released a statement late Friday acknowledging the arrests.
“This is another step, but not a conclusion, in a very personal and painful tragedy,” he said. “I also want to thank everyone who has joined us in mourning the loss of Sean. People from all over the world contacted the Redskins to share our grief and offer their prayers for Sean and his family. We will never forget the courage his family, especially Jackie, Pete and Donna, have shown. Their composure has been a source of strength for us all.”
Seems it might not have been a hit.
