I've been watching football for more than four decades.  That isn't the first time I've seen people celebrate big hits that resulted in injuries.  Do you really think it was because of some tiny bounty?

I don't know if it had to do with the bounty or not.  But maybe it has to do with the culture of the team that was cultivated from giving financial incentives for injuries and "cart offs".  Like Jonathan Vilma offering $10,000 for anyone who could injure Brett Favre to take him out of the game.

It might not have been about the money, but rather just the encouragement of attaining that kind of goal, the goal of injuring the opposing QB.

I'm not saying their cheap shots during the game were anything out of line of what we've usually seen in the NFL.  But it was definitely noticeable and far more than average how deliberate they were to hitting Favre after the pass.

Scumbags.

It isn't like we had a competitive advantage. Hell, we were one of the worst defenses over that period... its not like we actually CHEATED, like the Patriots... and you didn't see any of them get suspended.

What the Saints did was far worse.  Pretty much every football analyst agree on this, even if you look at the roundtable discussions, polls, and based on the punishments.  It's unanimous amongst everyone outside of Saints fans, that what they did was definitely worse than spygate.

And unlike Belichick, who quickly admitted to his faults,  Sean Peyton lied to investigators for 3 years, and also encouraged his coaching staff to deny knowledge of the bounty system.

Hence the much harsher punishment as well.

Quote:
I do not like punishments that are overly harsh to "set an example." I think that we deserve a punishment, yes, but this is overkill. This is akin to the "death penalty" for our team kind of like the SMU situation a long time ago.. The coach, the GM, the assistant coach, 2 high round picks (we don't even have a first this year), 500k fine, and then we're probably going to get 6-7 defensive players suspended as well, AT LEAST. We will not be able to field a competitive team in the least, which punishes the fans of the team as well as destroys competitive ballance.

I agree that it was a bit overkill.  How much overkill is debatable, but clearly they were being made an example of.

With that being said, what they did was horrible, and they do deserve to get the worst punishment ever dished out to a franchise, which is what they got.

Quote:
To make matters worse, we cannot appeal this. The only person who has any sayso in any of this is Rodger Goodell. The NFL has an exemption to anti-trust laws and Goodell is the Judge, Jury, and Executioner. Its the same issue that we're seeing right now with referees calling even touching the QB a penalty. I understand the need for player safety and professionalism, but there is such a thing as going too far...

I agree, but I'll also mention that Goodell did meet with the Player's Association to hear suggestions about what kind of penalty should be dished out.

Quote:
Also, realize this... Sean Payton is out 7 million dollars now, and it's not like he's rich. He's not a Saints player. They have given Sean Payton a bigger fine than they gave the entire organization... and you've got to understand, a lot of us from that area have a lot of respect for the guy... He is ultimately responsible for saving our team from getting moved to LA.

I really don't understand the sympathy towards Sean Peyton and the salary he's going to lose.  Considering his policy put alot of football player's total career at risk and THEIR salaries at risk as well.

Far worse? I mean, perhaps it was worse, but do you really think that nothing but a 500k fine for the patriots organization is on par with the penalties being doled out for this?

They also lost a first round pick, which is huge.

Quote:
There is such a thing as too much punishment though. This is a prime example of that. Suspending Sean Payton for 2 games would have been the worst punishment ever dished out to a franchise, given that they've NEVER suspended a head coach before. Half a season would have illicited a similar reaction to all of us Saints fans, which is what we thought the absolute worst case scenario could be... but to KILL competitive advantage and destroy the Saints organization in an SMU like death penalty? There are a TON of players even agreeing that this is overkill. Especially given that Sean Payton, while having knowledge of the program (Albeit VERY little knowledge, even the NFL admits he had very little knowledge if you read their findings), was not at all active in the program.

Again, I don't disagree with you about that.  Goodell is pretty shroud.

Quote:
No, he did not, at least from what I've read. From what I've read, he's met with "multiple players in leadership positions" but he has not formally met with the NFLPA. In fact on the contrary, he has banned the NFLPA from speaking to the Saints organization about the issue.

Yeah it was one or the other, you could be right on that one.

Quote:
It wasn't HIS policy. Sean Payton was not a ringleader in all of this. Willfully ignorant? Perhaps. But he didn't run this program or contribute anything towards it. Greg Williams had full control of the defense. To fine the organization 500k is one thing, the organization can eat that... but to fine Sean Payton 7 million dollars, is ludacris.

It's kind of like what happened to Joe Paterno with the Sandusky mess.  He wasn't the one committing the crime, but he played dumb.

But again not only did he just allow it.  That's not the bigger reason for the punishment.  It's because he lied to investigators and denied knowledge about it for 3 years.

And on top of that he told his coaching staff to deny knowledge about it too.  Now that is pretty awful.

I think your opinions are far more valid than SP's.

It is just going to really REALLY suck for your team next year.  You can pretty much count them out of any kind of title contention.  Ugh...

Possibly, but damn Sean Peyton was such an integral part of their title run with his ballsey play calling and overall offensive prowess.

I think Brees is spectacular, but the system Peyton set up and the play calling he did was also a crucial part to their success.

I think they can still be a playoff bound team.  It's just going to be a real uphill battle.

Man if my team lost Tomlin for a whole year, they'd be royally fucked.

Anyone at any other job that just openly broke the rules for three years would be fired forever. One year- That's not harsh- that's too gentle.

I heard because of the current situation and Brees being pisses that he was tagged...they might be forced to offer him a bit more money.

Even though its bad for the franchise, I'm happy for brees.  Dude deserves as much money as he can get.  His whole careers he's taken the hard road.
