RUST!
    #1557518 -

the duck living in my cars exhaust has a few 1/2 pint "ball" jars. theres 4 holes in the lids for innoculation. some of the jars have rust around the holes on only their second use... and some of those are spreading a rusty water or something around its colonizing cakes... what can be done to fix this (if anything) or prevent rust from forming on any of the jar lids.

When I get new jars I always smear a little silicone over the newly drilled holes to prevent water damage and rust.

If your rust hasn't spread too much, you could try sanding away the rusted area and applying a thin coat of silicone.

Just ask the guy at home depot where they keep bathroom caulk. It should be in the same area. Good luck!

might could use clear nail polish, but remover isnt going to leave a thin coating that will prevent rust, also they sell plastic canning lids, i couldnt find ne forever , then oneday they had them at Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart only carries canning supplies seasonally. Good news is that canning supplies are in season.

why not spent a dollar or three on plastic lids...silicone is costly and the lids will still rust, the flash time for silicone is 4 months before it is actualy cured, and the volitles arent that great for the mycelium, fruits that come in contact with it dont do well either....plastic lids are around $.60 each...cheaper if you buy bulk.

A tube of silicone at Walmart is only about $1.99. I've used the same tube of silicone to protect well over 100 jars. I have some of the same lids from almost a year ago.

Also, the curing time for silicone is only 6 hours, but I always wait overnight anyway. I've never had a problem associated with the silicone for mycelium or the carpophores.

I prefer plastic lids also, but metal lids come with the jars. Might as well use them and prolong their usefulness.

er...
what exactly is the problem with rust? apologies: it sounds bad but im figuring, its like on the lid seperated from the mycelium by a layer of verm, so.... aint that just fine?

"curing time for silicone is only 6 hours,"

lol! Maybe the drying time...most people dont realize the time many compounds need to fully cure. Some plastics can take over a year to cure 100%. Plastisols being released into the air the whole time.

I reported the tube directions only after someone else reported the curing time was 4 months.

It was a suggestion offered in response to a problem. This solution has continuously worked for well over a year and past your reported and extended curing time without detriment to yield or potency.

If you have related experiences which would suggest otherwise, please share them. Thanks, in advance.

the actual term should have been flash time...when the majority of solvent is released...takes a couple of weeks for paint but the nature of silicone is alot different....and the VOCs are quite bad...ever check up on how long it is for plastics....
