Terrarium - Get glass sticking to plastic with silicone ??

A terrerium was built out of a plastic container, with a hole cut in the lid to stick a pane of glass over.
Fishtank safe silicone was used to seal the glass to the plastic, but the silicone would not stick to the plastic.
Anyone know how something can be used to help it stick?

That plastic you used looks a lot like rubbermaid plastic, which if I'm correct doesn't like to stick to many things. When I made my rubbermaid FC, I tried using the alcohol safe silicone, didn't work. I tried using construction silicone, didn't work. I even tried using industrial super glue, didn't work. But it looks dont bother you too much, the handy mans secret weapon works wonders. Mine has stuck well, and a large roll of it will last you for quite some time. Good Luck

gorilla tape.
duct tape isn't as good.
go with gorilla tape.
I use it on all of my tubs with great success.

you could rough it up with a brillo pad or something. Like scoring to give it something to grip. You could do something like I did and get rid of the pain glass and switch to plexi-glass or those light sheilds off flourescents available at Lowes. They are better then the ones at home depot and cheaper.<a lot thicker> Then you could drill holes and screw them like mine
I put a thick bead of silicone down then put the plexi on there then started drilling holes. go from ones side to the other so you do not get boes<sp> in the plastic. then when dry silicone the seam on the top and bottom. works like a charm a little labor intensive though

gorilla tape can be found at all hardware stores.
in home depot and Lowe's it is by the duct tape. just ask for it wherever you go.
it is like duct tape but much better. yes, it does have a better adhesive. the same quality with every roll, another bonus.
it is black, not grey. the adhesive is a much lighter color, somewhere around white.
made by the gorilla glue company. but I'm sure you figured that already.
costs around 8-9 bucks a roll. yes, expensive. So worth it though. works well in humid and wet environments.
works very well holding automobiles together. just be sure to clean your surfaces with isopropyl and let them dry.

Rocking, I had a feeling it was related to gorilla glue. Ill take a look for it next time I goto a bigger hadware store.
JSshroom: I like the look of your FC. Nice and tidy. Do you find the silicone does anything if it doesn't stick?

Hey man, if you don't want to use tape you could get the water-proof apoxy at wallmart. That shit will stick to any and everything. GL man

I used plexi glass and 30 year silocone cauking on mine. I deffently want to rough up the surface on the container, it really helps alot.

to get silicone to stick to rubbermaid, all you have to do is sand the spots you want the silicone to stick to... you can also use epoxy like holesnype, epoxy chemically bonds to plastic, whereas silicone mechanically bonds to plastic (ie, it needs to have some sort of retention: sanding, steel wool, etc)

yeah the silicone keeps the contams out. Well not if it doesnt stick. I took a razor blade and used it to rough up the tops of the tubs. then thick bead of silicone 2. then put the plexi or whatever you want to use. start drilling that way when the tub lid flexes it cannot move the silicone around and it stays put. works like a charm Ill give it that.

I like things to look tidy. I used washer under the screws and nuts on both sides. I also got a little rust on some of the inner screws so you might dab some silicone on them to protect them from the humidity but its not gonna hurt anything. I found the more screws the better so the top wont flex at all.

Thanks for the advice. I don't know that i'll get my hands on "gorrilla tape", or that amazing goop stuff, as i'm not inside of the US, and never heard of it before. But i'm sure i'll find something similar.
