Silicone/RTV stuff not adhering to plastic lids for injection port
    #4327365 - 06/23/05 03:18 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

This is really making me mad enough to wet my pants on the public bus.  During rush hour.
So, I use RTV high-temp gasket maker stuff, some silicone sealant rated up to 400 degrees--neither of them stick to the slick plastic lids  that I've bought made from Ball.  Using about 1/4" or so drilled holes, goop up a good bit of it on the top and bottom.  The needle goes in to withdraw liquid mycelium and POO! the plug pulls out when I pull out (poor innuendo intended :smirk:)!
What am I doing wrong?  Diver mentioned "Household Goop" and it looks to be an adhesive as well as self-healing.
Is the gauge of the needle a problem with this?  How do others form their self-healing injection/withdrawal ports on plastic lids?
I swear to god I'm making this too difficult.  There must be an easier way or something I'm missing.  I can't see the forest for the contamees.  :smirk:

    Any help/thoughts appreciated.

    Gratsie.

Try using some coarse sandpaper and roughing up the lid where you want the sealant to stick. Give it something to grab on to.

i'm using metal lids just for that reason (same thing happened to me).
punch the hole w/ a nail, it makes a nice ragged hole and gives the silicon something to hang on to.
i found this works mush moe bedda

Give the surface a quick scuffing with some sandpaper, then blow any dust away.

Most importantly, clean the area with pure alcohol just before you're about to apply the silicon.

Silicon won't stick to grease, oils, waxes... If there's a layer of it on the surface you're applying it to it's very likely it'll just slide back off when it cures.

Which is kind of ironic, since once it's stuck it's about the biggest pain in the ass to ever get back off.

I tried resealing the edge around our bath a while back. I had to buy this special organic shit that digests the silicon and even that took hours worth of effort.

I'm not totally sure about this, it's totally from memory, but I think there's something in certain materials that silicon doesn't like and won't stick to for some reason. I can't remember what it is, I think it might have been something like sulphur. I just remember reading something about sticking it to certain plastics or rubbers.

I think it was that sulphur prevents it from curing properly. So, provided it cures on the plastic, it's probably compatible with it.

As above, sand and clean with alcohol and dry. Also let it cure for a few days.
You can puncture several holes around your main one and make sure the silicon passes through them all, coat top and bottom. The extra holes will anchor the plug more.
When inserting and removing the needle do it slowly, you can stick a fork through the needle, so the needle is between 2 prongs which will push the plug back if it trys to come out (or hold with your fingers)

Interesting.  Thanks for the help, all.  I will give some of these ideas a shot.

Also, another thought for you...

Try using a rubber tubing in the lid stuffed with polyfill like agar's tek uses.  Only when you make the hole in the lid, make it MUCH more smaller than the hose.

Make it to where the tubing can barely squeeze through the hole.  If the tubing you get is big enough, there will still be plenty of room for a syringe to get in the tube, and yet the tub will be firmly stuck in the lid.  The tubing will flare outward to the ends.  The bigger tubing at the end will also be easier to get polyfill into.

You can still finish it off with some RTV around the edge to make sure it's sealed.

Good luck.

In the 7 years since this thread was posted that's become common knowledge.

Good looking out for folks though.
