Smoking Cessation Hypnosis
    #15682790 -

I am considering going to a hypnotist to stop smoking.  Has a hypnotist worked for you in the past to quit smoking?  Have you ever been to a hypnotist before?

Smoking is starting to ruin my endurance and I need to quit.  Do you think there is a better alternative than a hypnotist?

Thanks.

My dad told me about one of his friends who I know as well and he told me how years ago he went for hypnosis to quit smoking. He was somewhat reluctant to the idea of being hypnotized but said he would go with an open mind and give it an honest shot.

He said him and a dozen other people sat in a dim lit room and were told to put their head backs and eyes closed. When he sat back up he thought that was a few mins relaxation to start and they were going to be hypnotized after that. The guy running the program said everyone look at your watches and they had been out for almost 50 mins.

My dads friend threw his pack out when he got to his car and never picked one up again. He said it was like he forgot he was a smoker.

Ultimately all it boils down to is disassociating the feeling of "I want a cigarette" from the action of getting a cigarette.

It's like a little spark or an impulse and it's really subtle; presumably it originates in the amygdala. That spark triggers a larger cascade of thoughts/neurotransmitters that make you think about acquiring a cig. The thing is, that spark is really weak in of itself. But when it triggers the larger cascade you are now dealing with more than just a little spark and that is what makes it difficult to quit.

If you can detach the spark from your actions then quitting smoking is a piece of piss. All methods basically aim to do this - in Allen Carr terminology the spark is "little monster" and the consequential flurry of thoughts/feelings is the "big monster". But NRT does quite the opposite: it reinforces the spark by providing nicotine - hence its 95% failure rate.

The trick is to basically develop the ability to just observe the spark and let it pass by. Whereas when you are a smoker, you will tend to react to it and within a matter of seconds; this reinforces the programming in your brain that says "I can't live without a cigarette" - it's so used to the "amygdala spark => movement => inhale" pathway firing that to the brain it is more effort to rewire those pathways than to simply carry on choking oneself. So it throws all kinds of fears at you - but again, that's that pathway firing - because the cost:reward ratio is so favoured toward reward it's much easier for signals to flow that way, so they do.

i wanted to quit smoking years ago and turned to hypnosis. the first two times were ineffective under two different hypnotists then i found this old bohemian type dude and i worked like a dream. in retrospect it was the personalities of the people and the environment. the first two people i really didn't feel any connection with and the environment was very sterile. with Armand it was totally different... subdued lighting, book cases all around the room, carpets hanging from walls, that kind of stuff... he really created a mood and he was genuinely concerned about my quitting. after the session he gave me a copy of Khalil Gibran's book "the prophet" which i recently dug up... he also sent me a CD to listen to two days later but by that time i was already not smoking... then i had a second session with him regarding anxiety i was having regarding an upcoming chess tournament playing black w=using a new system i was studying at the time and i went 5 for 6 and won every game as black, beating one player rated almost 200 points higher then me... in that situation Armand didn't know anything regarding chess so he asked me to give him a list of suggestions and one day two friends and i created a list and Armand worked from that list. this was about 2 weeks before the tournament and again, he sent me a reinforcement CD that i listened to religiously...

now i've learned a lot more regarding reprogramming the subconscious mind since then, so i fully appreciate the power of suggestion, so to me there is a lot to hypnosis but markthegnostic from the spirituality forum is a hypnotist and therapist and claimed i just wasn't ready  to quit the first two times, which is total bullshit because this all occurred within roughly a two month time span and i swear i was motivated... if i wasn't motivated why did i continue to seek out help? i was motivated as far as i'm concerned, it was the personalities and the environment. how can someone relax with a stranger in a room that is lit up... thinking about it, even the room colors through me off... yeah, Armand knew his shit bless his soul... just after talking to markthegnostic i went to visit Armand to just say hi and found he died about a year ago. what's really weird is i needed his help before he past but because of my head space it totally blew over my head to even contact him, go figure...
