Using spent cakes to case?
    #1558331 - 05/18/03 08:36 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Can cakes that have produced a crop of mushrooms then be used to case or will the mycellium be to weakened by this point?

Not if they are spent.

rehydrate and you could get another flush
or two if you decide to case.

What if the cake is allowed to fruit once or twice ( so there is still nutrients in the cake), then dunked (or turned into mycellium water), and then broken up and used in a case.

my guess is that it would fruit but not as well as if you cased them straight out the jar. Prolly have a weaker flush with smaller shrooms.

if you crumble and then case as opposed to just
burying some cakes in casing material, the cake
is going to further deplete available nutrients as
it grows back together.

I'd suggest keeping with the cake and wait and
case the next batch of cakes right off the bat.

this way, you can dunk the cake and get a
couple more good flushes out of it and a little
more experience under your belt before you
try to case.

Casing with spent cakes is a waste of time, expecting fruits from adding a non-nutritous casing layer to cakes which have exhausted their nutrients is pointless. It may be possible for a cake to go back into colonization growth if nutrients havnt been completly depleted after fruiting has began of course I wouldnt expect to much from it, it is always better to case with fresh substrate.
