an apology is coming face to face with the person you wronged and acknowledging that what you did was wrong. Why would you never apologize to anyone?

surely an apology represents a shortcoming, but at its core its a decent act. I think there are apologies with nothing to back them up, or apologies that are used as lies, but a sincere apology i think is pretty easy to pick out and accept.

There is no need for apology if there was never intent to harm.  And by intent I mean  ignoring the possible cost to others when serving yourself.

What about when the absence of an apology results in further harm to another and you can prevent it? I can see a few different ways to approach that question so I'm interested what others think.

You accidentally "step on some toes" but you only pick up on it through body language. An apology fixes the problem, ignoring it creates bitterness.

Ignoring it does not create bitterness.  Self importance creates bitterness.  Are we really responsible for everyone's butt hurt?:ass:

I think an "oops" would be plenty.

The only true apology is "I am sorry I didn't know any better." Everyone wants the best for himself, so everyone does what he thinks is best. People just don't know what is best for them. People don't know the joy of living a peaceful, just life, the freedom and knowledge it brings. All wrong is done out of ignorance. "Forgive them Father, they know not what they do." Separation is just an idea, hurting others is hurting yourself. That is why guilt, heaviness, and shame follow. "I didn't know any better, I have not experienced a better way, I am sorry." This alone is real, and it is an apology to oneself, which is all. The good path is more full than the bad, but one must learn what is bad through experience before one chooses good. Peace, Peace, Peace.

If you are too 'happy' when you hug me, it could lead to violence. Just sayin'...

I think it's interesting that we say stuff like "I feel bad/sorry for you" when we pity someone. You are literally saying you feel bad, for them; the act of pity is a sharing of misery :P It empowers the person who now has the other person feeling bad because of them.

I don't like apologies, either. I hate it when someone does "wrong" to me and then apologizes. You're right OC, it is weak. Besides, the apology does nothing to fix what happened. I guess an action as an apology (or action with an apology) would be better, but I still don't like it.

But one can at least try to minimize harm done and not use that 'worldview of nature' as an excuse to widen it up or spread 'unneeded' harm.

By using electricty and any form of gas-powered transportation you are doing 'unnecessary harm'.

You know what I am saying. The manufacture of your computer and other toys has already caused environmental harm - and your mere existence as 1 of 7 billion people creates enormous pressure on many other species.

social interaction is largely about getting on the same wavelength, and avoiding isolation. You want to feel like other people see the world the way you do.

thats what apology is for. The point of an apology is to let someone know that you understand you have caused them pain.

If you don't think its your fault then you can't really apologise properly. Most apologies are like this - people just saying it to appease society or a particular person.

Actually, I would say the most important time for an apology is precisely when you never intended to harm.

This is because it is that moment when the most hate and misconceptions are in the air. It is positive and healing to aknowledge that you accidentally harmed someone.

Its all about aknowledgement, yknow? not about seeking forgiveness.

The weakness of apologies are when someone apoligises but keeps committing sin. Thats a low-life / morally poor / psychologically challanged game.
Also, apologising because you feel you ought to is just a sheep's game.

The best apology is simply a communication of awareness - that you are aware you caused someone pain and that you will use this awareness to try to minimse that pain in future.

If you don't actually give a shit about anybody else then obviously you only see apologies as ways of manipulating other people and thats just a sad sad story which is often told
