Yeah I'm fucked. This shit just bums me out because it could've happend to me too (i live in belgium). And also I'm wondering what this dude must have tought when he was doing this shit to innocent people

you and beanhead both are in belgium and this is a very tragic event, as for
what this man thought, the investigation will sort that out. if koraks is
correct then it's just another extremist trying to make his mark and the
tragedy is that it's always innocent people that suffer at the hands of these
assholes. things like this anger me because I value life and this is simply a
senseless act that will do nothing to benefit for anyone.

it's kind of crazy but my first thoughts when things like this happen is
for the welfare of people I know either personally or through the
shroomery that live in these areas.

I had a rather shit day and this in sequel of several weeks of eruptions of my heart disease, ambulance rides and panic attacks. I'm a bit numb as to serious business.

I'm sure they are OK, Belgium is small but not THAT small.

Beanhead is undoubtedly on an amphetamines binge and tomnl is probably unsuccessfully hunting liberty caps somewhere in the Rotterdam region

Then again, people may not be as predictable as I suppose them to be.

True, but it's the total lack of tolerance for other culture that puts them at odds with most of the developed world.

That's only true for a small percentage of Muslims, and it is equally true for a small percentage of Christians, Hindus, Jews, etc.

Their ultra conservative practices just seem out of place, and that'd be just fine if they kept it to themselves.

The vast majority of Muslims are peaceful, hold no grudge against people of other religions and participate in the societies they are part of. The problem is that the small minority that wreaks havoc is highly visible, while the peaceful majority is effectively invisible. Don't let that cloud your judgement.

Haha, now you are just making shit up.

That is precisely how things get made up, including this ridiculous notion that all cultures were created equal.  Next time, try looking around you for evidence instead of just internally rationalizing a convenient feel good position.

How many muslims live in your city? I find myself surrounded by them, and harassed by none. I'm not "rationalizing a convenient feel good position", I'm pointing out a bias in some people's views that is the result of asymmetrical information that is spread through the media. Note that I don't condemn the media for only reporting on trouble and not on all the things that run smoothly - just be careful with the conclusions you draw from the information you receive. I thought you were a scientifically-inclined person, but apparently, you're not too well-versed in terms of qualitative research methodology. If you were, you'd have seen the validity of my point.

Ha!  It beats just making things up to feel good.  Using external information to draw conclusions beats internal rationalizations every time.

What do you think the chances are that different cultures separated by distance and ideology, evolved out of different ecosystems with different resources and different influences all happen to end up today as equals with respect to any metric at all?  Nearly zero.  And yet you casually claim that is the case without substantiation.

Firstly, if you took the time to actually read what I wrote, then you'd see that I did make a comment about the moronic cultural concept of arranged marriage, but that that isn't necessarily associated with any particular religion. Secondly, your argument is based on the notion that one culture can in fact be better than another, or in other words: cultures are comparable in a moral sense. That requires some universal moral that could be applied to all cultures, and that is something the philosophers haven't worked out yet - if you have the definitive answer, I recommend you to step up and claim your Nobel prize. Thirdly, IF cultures are indeed comparable in a normative sense, then it depends on the nature of the universal norm that you apply which one turns out to be 'best'. The norms you are applying in your argument are all part of the Western, Christian-Judean cultural contingent, and are therefore not likely to be the right norm to apply to another culture.

In fact, if you think about this for three seconds, it's hard to see how you're even seriously trying to make an argument for your case, and it makes me wonder why I take the time to respond seriously to the verbal diarrhea you are spouting in this thread.

I think we can agree though that terrorism is unsavory, whatever the religious, dogmatic or cultural justification the perpetrators use.

No it doesnt.  I only requires an arbitrary metric.  Whether you choose to call that metric good is your judgement call.  I am speaking in generalities, not from a perspective of western norms at all.  You are projecting what you think I am arguing, not reading what I am actually arguing.

You are avoiding the point and taking that quote out of context, and you know it.

So Im not allowed to speak generally, nor am I allowed to have a western perspective.  Basically, Im not allowed to judge culture at all huh?  Not with respect to my own values and not with respect valueless metrics.

You are wrong and living in a fantasy land.  No cultures are equal on anything.  It doesn't matter what aspect you consider or what you personally consider to be good or bad.
