Deadly attack rocks central Liege in Belgium

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-16161746

Reports say several men threw grenades and fired on a crowd at a bus stop in Place Saint Lambert
A gun and grenade attack in the centre of the Belgian city of Liege has killed at least one person and wounded 47 including a toddler, media say.

Witnesses say a man in his 40s threw grenades into a crowded square from a rooftop before killing himself.

Earlier reports said at least two more men were involved, but city officials said the attacker acted alone.

It is not clear who the attacker was, but the public prosecutor said terrorism was not a cause.

TV images showed blood splattered across the cobblestones of Place Saint Lambert, where the attack happened.

Doctors at a city hospital are trying to save the life of an 18-month-old boy injured in the attack. At least six others are reported to be in a serious condition.

Medical staff are also said to be attending to some of the injured in the courthouse.

Greg Lenco, a journalist at local newspaper La Meuse-Liège, described the scene.

"We saw four explosions. I was in a building 200m from Saint Lambert Square," he said.

"It was quite incredible. We saw one man on the roof who tried to kill people. This man killed himself with a grenade."

Roads into the centre were sealed off but vehicles are now coming back into the city. Police helicopters are hovering overhead and explosives experts have gone to investigate the scene.

People were initially told to stay in buildings but are now returning to the streets.

Place Saint Lambert is a busy intersection, served by hundreds of buses daily. It hosts an annual Christmas market which attracts some 1.5 million visitors a year.

Yep, 2 dead, 10 wounded. Second perpetrator still on the run, if I'm not mistaken. Allegedly has something to do with the conviction earlier this week of a Pakistani family who killed one of their own because she didn't want to proceed with her arranged marriage.

My senior year of high school one of the girls in my class got pulled over for her blinker not working. We told her that the reason it wasn't working was because she ran out of blinker fluid. The next day she came to school and goes "You guys are fucking assholes, I went to Autozone and asked for blinker fluid and they laughed at me and asked WTF I was talking about. - Gumby

I agree. Although I'm a bit hesitant to put this down to the Muslim religion. Firstly, it's not certain yet that the Pakistani family I mentioned has anything to do with it. Secondly, arranged marriage is a cultural practice that is not necessarily associated with the Muslim religion. It would be the same as stating that capitalism is a Christian practice. Sure, they have something to do with each other, but don't get them completely mixed up.

True, but it's the total lack of tolerance for other culture that puts them at odds with most of the developed world.

Their ultra conservative practices just seem out of place, and that'd be just fine if they kept it to themselves.  Imagine an Amish sect blowing up a General Electric corporate office and then claim it the will of God.  Hey, your beliefs are all well and good, but when you start imposing them on others with a "convert or die" attitude, don't expect us to talk to you at the next family dinner.

Not directed towards Belgium specifically, but it's hard for any country to condemn individual acts of violence when it uses violence at the national level for "peacekeeping."

That's only true for a small percentage of Muslims, and it is equally true for a small percentage of Christians, Hindus, Jews, etc.

The vast majority of Muslims are peaceful, hold no grudge against people of other religions and participate in the societies they are part of. The problem is that the small minority that wreaks havoc is highly visible, while the peaceful majority is effectively invisible. Don't let that cloud your judgement.

should I have to tolerate a culture that allows for the killing of children
because the child misbehaves, talks to a boy from another religion, disobeys
the parents or refuses to enter into an arranged marriage. I personally dont
care if they're muslim or hindu, what their nationality, religion or
cultural values are, they can carry their asses back home for that shit
because when you're in a country that doesnt hold those values they break the
laws of that country and deserve to be punished accordingly

if this attack is the result of someone not related to the family that
koraks mentioned and did so as he stated because of a conviction of this
family, this is a terrorist attack because they're killing innocents to
make a political statement regarding the laws that dont honor their culture

I have great respect for the majority of muslims I've met because they really
are no different than I am, there are many that I call friends because
they've earned that honor by simply being decent humans. most I've known
would feed and shelter me if I were in need, they'd put my well being on the
same level as anyone else they know.

Seemingly, it only takes one bad Muslim to sour the reputations of millions.

can you guess which country i'm describing? :smirk:  :usa:

also..." Imagine an Amish sect blowing up a General Electric corporate office and then claim it the will of God."

what's the difference between this reference and that of what George W. Bush's administration did when he invaded Iraq/Iran/Afghanistan (and god knows how many other countries in the area) all because "god told him to"
