What are its dimensions? I bet you could easily make a simple pipe out of it with a drill, don't know how you could make a bong out of it though...

I would start with a thin drill bit and drill the main cavity (you can always make it wider with a bigger bit afterwards, if you so please), then use a thicker one to carve out the bowl. Make sure to be careful where you drill... you don't want a pipe that is awkward to smoke out of, so drill the holes in strategic locations. If making a carb, make sure to start with a thin drill bit so that you can adjust it to whatever size you like later on.

Careful with the oils on your skin, that would be a shame if they harmed the bark.

There is not even any actual bark on it, it's completely made out of minerals... I don't know much about fossils, but I kinda doubt that skin oils can harm them.

a distant relative found stone tools (an axehead) while cultivating the fields here. apparently we live at the site cavemen did during the stone age. my grandma had a stone axe toy when a kid. a soviet tractor driver noticed something jammed in his machine & threw stuff out of the way and they were told to have been stone tools and stuff.

It's an awesome fossil, but not worth all that much.

If I found something like that it would be priceless to me.

anything I can find really. never know what rare species you might stumble across. I actually have lots of photos to post to the mush hunting forum sometime soon from the hunts.

Very cool. I find ancient oyster fossils all the time around here, but they're quite common in this area.

good find! go back and look for more. i would dig the area up myself if it's allowed or private enough. assuming it's fairly hard material, you'll need diamond drill bits(cheap at a rock shop or kingsley north online), and you'll have to have either a water gravity feed onto a drill press to keep the bit cool, or you could use a foredom or dremel in a tub of water. it'll take many hours to drill the stem out. use light pressure and release the bit from the stone every few seconds, letting the debris clear and new water into the hole. you can't just drill right through. you'll wear the diamond off immediately and crack the stone. i like to drill the stem under the bowl, using a tiny bit in the center of the bowl to meet the stem, rather than the stem meeting the bowl on the side. how hard is the material? try to make a tiny scratch with a stainless steel pocket knife. if it scatches, try to scratch with glass. if it scratches with glass, try finger nail. if you can damage it with finger nail, you might not need to use diamond.

Sounds like good advice, but they're found mostly on mountaintops in limestone in some pretty rugged land. But that's how I know they're incredibly old, dating back to when warm, shallow seas covered this area.
