Because if there is other intelligence out there it could very well be the nail in the proverbial coffin for organised religions.

For that end, I dont mind a group of nutters spending millions on radio equipment.

Well this is a stretch of the imagination BUT...

If the intergalactic community became known to us and it turns out Earth is not alone in making up stories, I would imagine more advanced civilisations have gotten past the bullshit that plagues history. How silly would Earth be amongst all these civilisations if it were to remain adamant that some crazy old stories were true.

Then again, when religious people learn they are following but one idea amongst a global sea of bullshit ideas...  they still dont budge... hmm... maybe not.

Anyway, I would like to know if there are others. Purely because I like the thought of it.

Facts never get in the way of beliefs. Giving up a belief means you were wrong and we cannot do that - ever. Look at the War on Drugs. Governments would rather spend trillions, cause tens of thousands of deaths and continue to ruin millions of lives - any price is preferable to embarrassment.

Like those experts you mentioned in the other post, where one of them admitted he was wrong and saved himself from looking like a twat.

At some point the evidence contrary to a belief becomes too much for anyone to ignore. At this point you separate the humans from the neanderthals.
