SETI is worthless

For this discussion let's skip the alleged positive by-products such as super-fast digital switching and focus on the main thrust: to find an alien signal.
Note to Mods with itchy trigger finger: while the search entails science, it is basically a philosophical topic concerning "Are we alone?"
The infamous Drake Equation (though not an equation at all in any sort of mathematical sense) is only a starting point and ignores a zillion other assumptions needed for contact.
Let's examine a few factoids:
1. Settling on the "magic" frequency of the 21 cm (1,420 MHz) line of neutral hydrogen was by no means universally accepted nor was it independently thought up by all those involved. The problem of which frequency to search was not obvious nor a 'natural' choice and the idea had to be 'sold'.
2. Our RF leakage into space is not strong enough to be detected much past our solar system.
3. We have no beacons beaming directional information into space. We only listen.
4. Yet we expect another civilization to have an unlimited number of beacons beaming to various stars (wasting precious energy resources) and for them to wait for years or centuries for another civilization to detect the signal and return a message. Doesn't make any sense.

Doesn't make any sense.
Obviously it doesn't have to. We are Devo.

I agree.
Most signals found were realised to be interefence.
They found a couple of unexplained signals but they are just that - unexplained.
It doesn't seem reliable enough to be used as evidence of other civilisations.

Do you really think an advanced civilization is going to respond to these signals? I seriously doubt it because they probably know everything about us and don't need nor want to deal with us.

well, Im not that learned, or really interested in SETI...
from the way Orgone describes its parameters it sounds pretty flawed... but on the other hand, it has only been operational for at the very most 50 years... but realistically its operational/full effect efforts have been in place for 35 years or so. Even if RF travelled at the speed of light, a 35 light year radius isnt really that much distance covered. Its like trying to hear someone clap from somewhere in the world. so.... I dont really think that SETi is the best course of action, but on the other hand, SETi not finding anything doesnt really mean that there is no life out there.

We had been at this point of discussion some years ago SETI would only make sense, if the aliens would 'tunnel' their signals, so that they can go faster than TSL. They only can expect a response from those, who also have developed that technology.

Did you really read this thread? No-one here thinks that^ Besides SETI's main aim is to LISTEN.

Some of them may well do.
