Why is overpopulation a problem? * 1
    #15429231 -

Isn't this a self limiting problem?

I was just reading about the Yapese. They have lived on the island of Yap for thousands of years, and so they have had to deal with the problem of overpopulation for thousands of years. They developed a complex social system that has an effect of greatly reducing the birth rate.

When population size begins to significantly effect the quality of life, my guess is that the people of the world will do what humans do best - adapt.

And so will we, and so will we.

I doubt it will have to be so drastic.

This billboard might work a little when there is still relative abundance of resources, but when shit gets really tough my guess is that it will work a great deal.

Strange you mention billboards, as I was thinking about this yesterday.

If all the energy and recources that went into marketing and advertising were diverted to re-educating the public, we could probably quite easily undo many of the problems in society.

Shame these tools are only employed by people who have no regard for the wellbeing of humanity.

Every time I see a shampoo commercial, detailing some bogus scientific formula, I think that 30 seconds could have been dedicated to some form of social awareness.

Over population... Yeah I agree, I have no fear for it because all unsustainable systems, by default, will be forced to change or completely fail.

In fact, the birth rate has been in decline for many years now. I strongly believe in equilibrium. At some point, things will become unpleasant enough to force social change. Where possible, it is nice to see us forging ahead and noticing problems. But failing a perfectly rational transition, things will naturally change by default.

Loss of resources is just one of the factors in the equation, the other is loss of biodiversity. As we grab more and more resources from the biosphere, other species get less and less. This leads to a decrease in biodiversity, and it can take millions of years to restore the global biodiversity with the slow evolutionary processes that generates new species. Sure, sooner or later we will run out of resources altogether, and that will halt the population growth, but then we will already have exterminated a large amount of other species.

You are also supposing that the resource depletion will happen gradually rather than suddenly. It is much harder to adapt to sudden changes than to gradual changes, and I can very easily imagine a sudden collapse of the world economy as a consequence of peaking oil prices, then massive starvation around the world, and when people start to starve there will probably be war for the remaining resources, mass emigration from rich to poor countries, and so on...

In this case, what is happening is overpopulation that is being propped up by the presence of a 'boom catalyst'.... We use oil as if it is going to last, or as if it didnt take millions of years to form. We take it for granted in a really big way.

If, during the boom period of oil production, the population goes beyond sustainable limits in the event of oil shortages... the effects will be felt suddenly and sharp decline would ensue... which would trace the decline of oil production until it reaches an equilibrium. Just like an economic bubble... people are deluded and when it goes pop, its going to hurt.

Of course, that doesnt take into account the beneficial side effects of the boom period. Such as an increase in technological advancement. When it all goes downhill, there will be a greater emphasis on alternative solutions that were there all along, but we just couldnt be bothered switching to. These might not take the full shock but they will buffer it to some extent.

I think humans will want it that way.  We like a little drama. And as has been mentioned this will likely not be a gradual change so humans will fucking freak out.

it certainly seems like it even from just observing what's happened in my lifetime so far

of course we like saviors and that kind of bullshit as well

better angels is a good metaphor if you think of the angel as symbolizing our tendency to imagine psychotic good shit like saviors and heros and unselfishness and goodness.

even when good most people are doing it for psychotic reasons!

non psychotic reasons are my personal reasons if you need to ask.

We already have that. It's wide spread acceptance of birth control. Modernized countries don't experience population growth without the help of immigration.

Bother? We have played around with ethanol as an alternative, but it is a low octane fuel that uses much farmland.

It is simple economics. A gallon of high octane bio-fuel is 50-100% more expensive than gasoline or petro-diesel. When it is cheaper then we will switch.

The success of McDonald's is only party due to marketing. The foods they serve (salt, sugar, fat) were all incredibly important and hard-wired into our brains to earch them out because of relative scarcity. Even though now we consciously realize these items are cheap and ubiquitous, our ancient animal brain still signals strongly for these tastes and foods.

i agree for a lot of people marketing is their culture. They buy into brands because the brands symbolize something they aspire to, like manlyness or ecological awareness or health...

Yes, bother. Ethanol isnt the only alternative. Geothermal is a very reasonable alternative. Of course ethanol is the only alternative you are presented with though... It has to be something BP can sell you doesnt it.
Thats not being paranoid... its business. Same reason the electric car has been played down as useless.

yeah I've been wondering why they don't use deep oil well drilling to drill holes down to where it is really hot, then pour in water and make steam.

probably too far down

but fuck once you drill the hole all you got to do is pour in the water (says the non engineer), it must be a cover up by the ralien controlled oil componies
