Overpopulation and Diminishing Resources
    #2753153 -

I contend that it is socially irresponsible (and selfish) to have more than two children in today's world whether you can afford them or not due to the negative impact on our shrinking resources.

I agree 100% on that one! Most people haven't caught on yet...but we are running straight towards a steel reinforced concrete wall :smirk:

Just wait until we hit the peak. After that, we'll be faced with a growing population and an ever decreasing energy supply. They say that we could feed the entire world right now, with the ammount of food that is produced worldwide, but we still have mass starvation and famine happening in many parts of the world. I wonder what it will be like when we really can't feed everyone on the planet!

I was talking with a local here in Vegas who was bitching about the ever-increasing population (tripled in 5 years or so). "Damn people moving here from all over," he grumbled. "How many kids do you have?" I queried. He proudly responded, "Eight." Well, doh!

High infant mortality rates coupled with a fear of not being cared for in old age is what motivates people in the third world to have many kids, not ignorance of birth control.

my belief is this population can be controlled with some effort.... i find it dissapointing when some people use religion as an excuse to make so many kids

Agreed.

And furthermore, if one truly must raise children, he or she could be so unselfish as to adopt--rather than create another child simply for the sake of 'having a kid of their own", of which motives behind such a notion can be debated as greedy.

Personally, I don't have any particular affinity for children nor do I have any interest in raising any. I'm far more of an animal person--I'll gladly take the adoption of dogs and cats and other domestic animals over the aforementioned circumstances any day.

Just curious--have you ever had any kids?

I was reading this theory that the UN decided to create a virus to take care of this overpopulization problem: thus, AIDS was created (by taking a virus from a sheep and one from a cow and combining them). I think it was in a video called the Strecker Memorandum by a Dr. Strecker. I don't believe this, but it's interesting (and horrible). Anyway, I also read that if there gets to be 11-12 billion people our environment won't be able to handle it and life on the planet will just die, or wish it were dead. We may be taking up more space then ever, but at least we're doing a good job of killing all the other species off- in 1900 there were around 30 million species, in 1990 there were 15 million.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know the current human population?

2.1 is the number of children the average woman needs to have for world population to stabilize and shrink where it will hover somewhere a little below where we are now.

This is the average in the western developed countries. It seems to be the tendency that in developed countries with some money and jobs with women controlling their destiny somewhat they have this many kids on average.

*2.1 + infant mortality = stable population

That is what HIV/AIDS is, population control. But I don't believe that it was the UN or any other country that made it for that matter. Virus's that target human/primates are Mother Natures defense against us. We are nothing but a virus to Mother Nature, and her immune system will kick in eventually. And we will not win against it. We aren't much more than big soft moving piles of meat waiting to be consumed. AIDS/HIV has reaked havok on the world today and it is only transmitted thru bodily fluids. It dies within minutes of being released out of the body. What happens when we finally cause an outbreak of one of the strains of Ebola/Marburg? It has a 50%-90% kill ratio, finishes you off within 3 weeks, and can travel thru the air. Mother Nature wins, period. And then we get to start over, and screw it all up again.....

Would you contend that it is irresponsible to have kids you can't or do not want to take care of? Would you also contend that it is socially irresponsible to alleviate those who have children from the burden of raising them, thereby creating incentives to act irresponsibly?

Correct. A high infant mortality rate due to AIDS and other diseases.

Most of the people having these children, don't even make it to "old age". They die long before that of starvation, malnutrition, AIDS, and other diseases.

Besides that, most of the children suffering in Africa are orphans, being raised by various family members, or living on their own.

And I didn't say that they were "ignorant" of birth control. Quite the contrary.

We have tons of volunteers, through the Peace Corp and other such organizations, as well as the Red Cross, over there teaching these people everything one needs to know about birth control. And giving out free condoms.

No, they are not ignorant. They just refuse to apply the knowledge and tools given to them to protect themselves.

In my opinion, what motivates them is not high infant mortality rate, or fear of not being taken care of. It is pleasure.

Think about it. These people have no home, no food, no clothes, no fresh water, no drugs, no nothing to derive any sense of pleasure or comfort.

But the one thing they do have is sex. The ability to breed like rabbits, just to get their rocks off for that one moment of pleasure.

And boy, do they ever take advantage of it, huh?

Do I blame them? No. I can't imagine how horrible it would be to live in those conditions, under those circumstances. I understand that they find temporary pleasure and comfort in the act of sex. And I don't blame them for it.

I do blame them, however, for not taking advantage of the knowledge and tools given to them. The lives of these people would be *somewhat* improved, if they had less children to feed, and if their genitalia wasn't rotting off from the STD's that they spread among eachother.

It is an epidemic that could be easily thwarted, with condoms and knowledge as weapons. They have both of these.

There is no excuse for stupidity.

if they were having sex simply for pleasure, surely they would use the free contraception

That is what HIV/AIDS is, population control.

Hmm, sorry to jump into what can be considered the "conspiracy zone"...but here's some info I've always found rather disturbing!

China has a worsening HIV epidemic on their hands, which they completely denied up until just a year or two ago! They still REFUSE to provide safe-sex education to their population, thus promoting the spread of HIV. In some of the rural areas of inner China, there are infection rates of OVER 60%. Those levels were almost certainly caused by China's government run blood donation system.

You get paid to donate blood, so in some of the rural areas it has become a major source of income for some poor farmers and villagers. When the "China HIV epidemic" story broke a couple years back, there were some descriptions that came out about how the blood donation system works.

As it was described: there are beds set up in a circle around a single large tank. Blood from all doners is fed into the SINGLE tank and mixed together. Then the blood plasma is stripped off from the other parts and re-injected into the doners!

WTF! Now does that sound like a very good system? Even WITHOUT the HIV virus, such a setup is just ASKING for the transmission of any number of blood-borne viruses! I find it hard to believe that the Chinese government could be so incredibly stupid when it comes to medicine.

They are saying that, right now, there are possibly 10-20 million people in China who are HIV positive. This number is expected to grow exponentially over the next few years, as many of these people will unknowingly pass it on to family members and lovers.

If that's not a form of population control...it's about the single most stupid thing I've heard of :smirk:

I could find a few reasons to justify not having more than two kids, but preserving "shrinking" resources for future generations would be waaaaaaay down on the list near the bottom somewhere. This is because in actual fact the only resources which are being used up are the resources we burn to produce energy -- i.e. crude oil. The rest of them are still here.

overpopulation is a bigger myth than global warming...

if there was a population problem, wouldn't food and space be premium items, only available to those who fought for them?

what we see are localized problems with population, usually occurring in places where there are jobs, ports, etc...

these are things that attract people, so people gather around them, creating the illusion of overpopulation...

but really its just a matter of convenience, of what we're willing to do in order to survive...

drive four hours away from any city on earth, and you will find a wide open uninhabited space of land where houses are miles away from each other and land is just about the cheapest thing you can buy...

there's a catch though, living there is just a bit more difficult, because there's no electric and no water piped in and no sewer... who wants to live there? nobody... so, naturally, people don't live there, they choose to trade the hassles of living in an overpopulated zone for the convenience of what all those people can do for them

i agree, i'd say the planet is rediculously underpopulated. assuming that more poeple equals faster increase in techonology (more poeple working in scientific fields and consuming science?) and techonology being the key to overpopulation, we need to get breeding.
not to mention that hopefully oneday when cities are like 100x the size they are now that much pyschological choice/noise might produce far more interesting cultural results they even our largest cities are currently producing (not to say that certain large cities aren't awesome, just once cities get so big that poeple would be as free as if they were living in the woods things will get really cool)

i would also like to add that robots = k3y. without robots overpopulation would such probably, even with all the stuff. we'd need alot of robots to clean up after all those poeple.

2 days ago i went dumpster diving for the first time with a friend of mine who refuses to spend money for food on princible. we found about a weeks worth of food prepared that day (hopefully) and individually packaged just thrown out. we have so much food we pay to throw shit out, then pay poeple to dispose of the food we want to waste.

I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

do we have enough food to feed the whole world over?

i'd say almost certainly if we worked together with the european union and maybe some other cool countries. but i'd say that doesn't really matter, the whole world has enough food to feed everyone. its not a matter of enough food, its distibution and wasting energy making foods that aren't as energy/cost efficent.

Yes, we definitely have enough food to feed the whole world, and the reason we don't is first of all because this thing we named Economy doesn't let us do so: you can imagine that giving millions of tons of food out for free could easily lead to some kind of economic crisis...who would pay all the people that worked their asses off to cultivate all of it?? haha, politicians, government, taxes you say? come on we're a bunch of greedy bastards.

in response to the original post:

population growth is already slowing as countries go through demographic transition. the UN predicts the world pop will stabilize around 2100 at about 11-12 billion. population growth is certainly not a problem in industrialized countries such as the U.S. where the growth is negligible.

the problem is not overpopulation, it is distribution of resources and a plethora of other problems for developing countries that organization like the IMF and World Bank are trying to help.

This thread could be placed more in the category of politics and law, cuz hunger  is a political problem. But at the same time, politics do put some kind of barrier to worldwide spiritual evolution, IMO

heh.. that was a good one

but see Swamster the governments have already thought about this a long time ago.
Overpopulation.. there's two ways to control it.
Decrease the frequency or birth or increase the frequency of death.
So you are left with either birth control, or viruses and war. Or hopefully a combination of all of them. So let's just make a few viruses have a few nuclear wars and problem solved right?

Swami writes:

Deforestation worldwide.

There are areas in which the amount of forest coverage is shrinking. There are other areas in which it is expanding.

Topsoil depletion.

Nutrients bound in topsoil get depleted as plants grow, true. Those nutrients can be replenished. The topsoil itself remains -- it is merely a question of replacing the nutrients it once held. This is the purpose of fertilizer (either organic or non-organic).

Increasing air and water pollution.

There are areas of the world in which air and water pollution are increasing. There are other areas in which it is decreasing. In either case, there is no depletion of the amount of air or water available.

Overfishing of the oceans.

While there is no doubt that certain species of fish are less abundant than they once were, from the point of view of resources I presume your beef is that less fish equates to less food for humans. Switching from fish as food to fowl as food (or going vegetarian) solves that problem.

My point is that the only resources that are gone forever are those fossil fuels we burn. Trees regrow. Fish populations recover. Soil can be enriched. Metals and other materials are recyclable.

From a spiritual and philosophical point of view, I can agree there are advantages to having fewer humans around rather than more -- less despair, less deluded individuals, less violence, etc. I just reject the premise that resources necessary to maintain human existence vanish -- they don't.

The rain forest is in such a delicate balance, that it would take thousands of years, if ever, to recover.

from web page

Current annual topsoil loss on agricultural land in the U.S.: over 5 billion tons

Current annual topsoil loss on agricultural worldwide: 26 billion tons

Time required for nature to form one inch of topsoil: 200 to 1000 years

Historic cause of demise of many great civilizations: Topsoil depletion

Um hmmm. I took a look at that web page. Nice list of fantasy figures from an anti-meat organization. Interesting how not a single source for even a single one of their "factoids" is provided. I could put together a similar page with as much credibility given a couple of hours, with an entirely different set of figures. I'm surprised a self-professed skeptic famous for demanding proof on matters paranormal accepts so uncritically a totally unsupported laundry list of "facts". It seems out of character. Oh well.

Topsoil doesn't vanish, the nutrients the soil contains instead are depleted. These nutrients can be replaced.

As for the rain forest, it is true that it regrows at a much slower rate than a hardwood forest in Ohio or a pine forest in Maine, for example. Nonetheless, it will regrow if left alone.

I would prefer to focus on the spiritual and/or philosophical aspects of overpopulation, however. It is clear the earth can easily support many more humans than are alive today. The question to be answered is should it.

We also have to take wind erosion into account here, pinky. As nutrients in the soil are depleted, the soil becomes lighter and more dust-like. Then you come along and harvest all the plants that are holding the soil together...so that wind can blow away the top layer of soil.

Remember your history? This was (and is) a big problem for prairie farmers.

Not to nitpick here, but the soil still isn't gone. If it gets blown around by wind then it's not where it used to be, true, but it's not as if the damn stuff just vanishes in a puff of smoke. It's just downwind of where it was earlier.

Topsoil without nutrients is no longer topsoil (doh!). The Sahara desert (once a lush forest) is full of nutrientless topsoil that has just blown around a bit.

Seems you equate the lack of destruction of minerals as somehow meaning the resources are still there.

None of this is directly applicable to either spirituality or philosophy. It is an argument over whether or not resources "vanish" as human population increases. I would happily participate in the continued derailment of the thread, but I believe the S&P mods might object.

As a parting shot, however, the Sahara is sand. Sand is not topsoil nor was sand ever topsoil, although most topsoil does indeed contain at least some sand. Adding nutrients to sand doesn't make topsoil, it makes enriched sand. As for "destruction of minerals", the minerals absorbed from soil by plants aren't destroyed, they become part of the structural components of plant tissue.

I repeat, I can see reasonable spiritual and/or philosophical arguments in favor of deliberately choosing to have fewer children, it's just that preservation of "vanishing" resources isn't one of them.

As a parting shot, however, the Sahara is sand.

As a parting shot, only 15% of the Sahara is sand.

The Sahara has undergone a series of wet periods, the most recent occurring c.5,000-10,000 years ago; it was not until c.3000 BC that the Sahara transformed into its present arid state. There is dispute as to whether the desertification of the region has continued into historic time. Those who support this theory contend that increasing aridity is the reason for the recorded advance of desert conditions into areas under cultivation in Roman times in the north and more recently (since the late 1960s) in the south. Opponents of this view explain such changes as being the result of alterations in land-use practices and neglect of water-supply and irrigation systems.
