Delusions vs. DELUSIONS

We all have our vanity delusions, "I am special and am above average in looks, intelligence," etc. and other minor delusions. Those I understand as they are easy to hold onto, but the ones I truly do NOT get are the 'special ability' delusions. You know, the ones that go like, "I have been able to read minds ever since I fell out of a tree at age 5," or "I can move objects with my mind."

What kind of mental gymnastics to you have to go through to continuously trick yourself into believing you can do something that you cannot? I have never heard about this type of delusion for purely physical abilities. Sure people lie and exaggerate, but have never heard of anyone going on talk shows and writing books about how they can run a mile in 3:30, but the list of people with alleged spiritual/mental powers is endless. Again, many are con artists, but a very large number are sincere.

Are the sincere ones just plain mentally ill?

Are the sincere ones just plain mentally ill?

The sincere ones use delusion to make themselves feel better, so I guess not deluding themselves is the mental illness they're escaping from. I don't blame them though. It must suck knowing you're not special.

Luckily I don't have that problem. To prove it I'll read Icelanders mind right now. He is thinking these delusions are caused by death anxiety. :imspecial:
