is it possible to refresh casings?
    #1527800 - 05/07/03 03:53 PM (15 years, 19 days ago)

My dog was wondering if it's possible to refresh a casing, after a few flushes, so that it is able to continue fruiting.
When a casing is finished it's useful life, is it due to moisture in the casing material being gone, or is it due to nutrients in the substrate being used up?

thanks

Are you talking about the casing material you wipe off the top of the case or are you talking about the entire casing case after say the 2nd flush? If it is the first one, no I don't think thats a good idea, but I'm new. The second one is a good idea, what you want to do is use a sterile spatula/knife to get the case out of the container and then dunk that in water for 20 so hours, that should replenish some nutrients and produce a nice flush. But I'm new.

I guess I'm talking about the second option, refreshing the entire bottom case/substrate/top case unit. Is it not an option to dunk the casing tray into water?

nm, I need to learn to search before I post

Still, if anyone had any new input, it'd be appreciated

You can patch the casing material between flushes or recase the substrate.
You don't need to dunk a casing...the needed moisture is in the casing material...that is why you keep it moist.
Don't get the casing too wet...you will get contams.

Could be both.
Usually its from the nutrients being used up.
But if your humidity is bad or you don't mist the casing...it will dry up due to moisture loss...and it will stop flushing.

The amount of flushes can also depend on what substrate that you are using.

What substrate are you using by the way?

I'm still awaiting delivery of my spores, so I'm working purely on theory right now.
I'm planning on using 6T's WBS substrate, with 50/50+ casing

Would a better substrate like manure/straw have nutrients last longer, thusly enabling the casing to flush more, provided the moisture level is maintained through mistings (while making sure not to seal the casing with too much water)?
