how much water did you use to make the cakes & how long have they been colonizing ?

a month? damn.. what temp are you keeping them at? They should eventually colonize even with low water. but you really cant do anything while they are in the jars without risking contams.

Try to keep them at 85 and in a humid environment. maybe they will absorb some moisture from the air.

you have the holes untaped, right ?
otherwise, you likely have a bacterial contaminant causing growth to stop.

UNTAPED?? The holes in the top of the jar are taped, and have been taped since they've been sterilized. Also, hippie, please reply to our other post about the cakes breaking in jars.

One way to add moisture to your cakes and keep them at a nice temp is to put them in an aquarium with a little bit of water and a fish tak heater. Just make sure the heater stays below the water level, or you'll burn it out like an idiot friend of mine.
