need help deciding which martial art i should pursue
    #15228888 -

anybody here with any experience that can offer me some guidance?

i'm mostly looking for a discipline that can provide me with the ability to defend myself when threatened (i'm not a fighter). i'm 5'11 160 and very athletic (and although my balance and flexibility are definitely lacking bikram yoga is helping me with that rapidly)

Ju Jitsu is pretty sweet. If you hate grappling with sweaty guys on the ground though I would reccomend Muay Thai (Boxing with knees, elbows, and kicks)

i was in ju jitsu for a bit. great shit and covers many different areas of martial arts.

i always wanted something that took more of an aggressive approach though.

There is Aikido for a more defensive style of martial arts.
I have never taken it myself but my friend sure seems to enjoy it.

I bet if you pm'd nicechrisman he could tell you more about it as he is a black belt in it.
Although he doesn't post much anymore.

Idiot knows nothing.

A gun is almost totally useless for self defense because by the time you realize someone is attacking you they have generally closed the distance, and a gun is much less useful inside the 21 ft range.

I have studied a Myriad of martial arts including kung fu, jiu jitsu, Kali, Thai Boxing, Silat, savate, karate, judo, etc.
I would personally recommend  MMA and/or Filipino martial arts.

MMA is an empty hand art, it's builds your physical toughness remarkably, and gives you a good skillet for empty hand fighting.

Filipino Martial Arts are primarily weapon based. They address how to use bladed and bludgeoning weapons. It also includes very strong empty hand techniques, and is pretty much the dirtiest and most effective street fighting style around. It's the style Matt Damon studied for the Bourne movies. It is also one of the only surviving complete martial arts(meaning it includes striking, grappling and weapons).

I am an instructor in JKD. It's a mix of many different styles, but at this point in my training I feel strongly about learning each system separately as well.

Thanks for the recommendation though, most people have no idea what JKD is.

martial arts aren't REALLY for fighting, IMHO.
martial arts are for working on your form.

don't look for a certain style, look for people you get along with.  it's all just karate anyway.

my personal experience is that karate attracts relatively normal geeks, tae kwon do attracts total absolute losers...  but it DOES help you work on your leg flexability.  and kung fu attracts crazy ass, stoner, shroomer, drunk motherfuckers who like to just get amped up and fucking go crazy flying around doing backflips n "spinning dragon kicks".

my 2cents.

You must be trolling.

Martial arts aren't for fighting?
It's not like people all over the planet have been using them to kill each other for thousands of years.
It isn't like the American military needed to develop a whole new type of ammunition and firearm to stop the charging Filipino warriors during the American-Philippine war.

Don't look for a certain style because it's all just Karate anyways?

Ignorance at it's most intense. Have you read ANY history regarding the martial arts?

alright.  sure, you're right.

i still dun think any amount of martial arts are gonna help you beat up a huge ass black dude the size of a fuckn truck.

martial arts could give you the leg strength so that your legs dun turn to jelly from havin' the guy in your face, or some spirit to hold face when he's calln u a white boi faggot, or the balls to "roundhouse kick" the guy in the face even tho you'd get a new ass hole.

i dun think it's gonna help you beat him up tho.

I took Shuri Ryu and Judo for years. I can tell you that you have no idea what your talking about. I have been jumped by multiple people on a few occasions and wasn't the one who ended up in the hospital despite the odds. I take martial arts seriously and it has made me a better person for it. I am confident and know that I can handle myself. I also trained with weapons; Bow staff, knives/throwing knives, assault rifles, hand guns, explosive devices and more. I also lift weights and am a pretty big guy.

I would have to say out of all all of my training, karate is the best thing I did for myself. You don't have to be a big guy to take out a big guy. It just helps that I am a big guy too. lol

You are just plain wrong.
I can tell you haven't trained very long or at all.
I can consistently beat new students who have as much as a 70 lb weight advantage at the dojo.
Dealing with a barely trained, or untrained opponent is easy once you have several years of quality training.

Only martial art I've ever actively pursued was Judo. I really enjoy it. Some of my friends who take muay thai/jujitsu think it's lame in comparison to those two but I disagree.

my adoptive parents encouraged me to get involved in martial arts... during a seven year period i studied jujutsu and isshin ryu(our next door neighbor operated an isshin ryu dojo out of his home)... i experienced two unprovoked attacks in my lifetime, in both cases it was impractical to implement isshin ryu techniques... it was the my jujutsu training that saved my ass both times because my attackers were right up in my face... in both cases i was able to subdue them and lay a beating on their throats... if you can maintain distance then karate forms can help you but attackers never try box with you, they generally trying to get all over you... just my humble two cents...

good luck

Muay Thai if you want something that will enable you to physically handle your aggressors. It's very physical though, so if you don't like getting hit etc, avoid.

I really enjoyed Aikido. I was in a dojo that focused on the spiritual aspect of Aikido and I thought it made a big difference.

Its got seriously awesome techniques and anyone can do it.
