Hunt for Hens
    #15162879 -

I was driving with a friend to another friends house when we pasted a park. I saw that the park was full of large oak trees, so I made him turn around and drop me off for a quick Hen hunt around the park. I searched probably 50+ oak trees and found plenty of mushrooms, but only three that resembled hen of the woods. What ever they were, they were too far gone to pick, but I managed to snap a few pics for an ID here on the shroomery.

They were growing around two large oak trees(red oak and white oak) in a grassy/mossy area in the middle of the park. The mushrooms were around a foot and a half to two feet long, so very large. They were growing off the base of the tree, and had a porous white underside. The color is very dark, which I guess can happen to hens in areas with constant sun exposure. Yet the thickness seemed a bit off and a little bit thicker then what I see on here. Here is the picture, hope you can tell me what I found, thanks.

I don't know what to think about the answer I got. Yeah, it's nice to finally find something I've been looking for. That being said, its pretty crappy to find it in the condition it was in. Almost wish it was a non edible, then finding out that it would have been a beautiful find a few days earlier...Rats! hahaha.

Somtimes that's the way the mushroom crumbles. They'll be back next year...You've found them once, that's once more than I've found them.

I know how you feel, I finally found a hen last year near an oak at a launch ramp. It was pretty large but wayyy too old. I was disappointed. I've been waiting for it to return this year, but so far no luck.

Well I guess they grow into October, so I'm hoping that those three weren't the only ones in the area. That neighborhood is pretty large and there are plenty of parks in that area, so as soon as the weather clears up I'll be back at it. At least now I know where to look and hopefully I can find some edible specimens. Too bad its been raining 24/7 around here :frown:

Keep looking fresh ones are out.  We were at the OMS foray in Ohio today and we got 15 fresh ones under a single tree.  Another nearby tree had 3 nice ones and another tree had 3 rotten Hens- Grifola.
