@cro and Mj's Great Pacific Northwest Pelliculosa Hunt
    #2172266 - 12/12/03 05:31 AM (13 years, 2 days ago)

Well today, @cro and I went and took the Ferry to Kingston and then over the Hood Canal bridge. We went into two clear cuts looking for the elusive yet common Psilocybe pelliculosa mushrooms.

@cro found most of them today and probably has better photographs than I do. I took a total of 63 images and only about 15 of them are any good for posting and then a bunch of non shroom photos which are horrible taken in Port Gamble.

We found Hundreds of Galerina mushrooms, Carrot cups (Aluria Aurantia), Naematolomas, Conocybes and some P. pelliculosa. amd a few odd unidentified shrooms. We hike up and down a few rugged mountain tops like Lewis and Clark hiking the rugged Oregon Trail. WEnt down a stram bak nk of rocks and then climbed up a steep mountain of shreaded logs, stumps and millions of wirey branches. It was a trippy day.

Later we returned to Seattle in the dark and went Cyanescens Hunting and I took about 25 photos of the cyans but only about five came out okay.

Here are all of those results posted below for you to scrutinize and drool over.

Next time I am taking my Nikon FM and my macro lens. Sometimes i can take better images with it then with my Nikon Cool-Pix 4300:

Here are three of over twenty images of the P. pelliculosa and they are the only ones of mine which turned out clear.

Hopefully @crop's images are better than mine so we have to wait for him to post his version of our adventure.

P. pelliculosa.

A rather large Conocybe species, looks very much like large P. pelliculosa mushrooms. There were many of these scarttered amongst the branches in the clearcuts. later we found out from a logger that they try to keep the alder out of the clear cuts. But we found Alder all over , that is broken crushed branches of them and found out where to get permission to go shrooming at qhwew rgw logging gates are locked. Some of the clearcuts are being spray with chemicals for growth and we saw many ho-dad planted trees out in the clearcuts and a helicopter dumping fertilizers in the mountains.

Here is one image of these large conocybe mushrooms

A few clusters of some mushrooms growing on a stump.
Dum ditty, dum ditty, growing in a clump.

amd then some:

After returning to Seattle @cro and I went and looked at two patches of P. cyanescens. One someone apparently picked out and the other had a nice small amount of medium shrooms. @cro picked a nice small collection and I photographed a few.

Here are the five images I took out of a lot of images which all blurred in the dark because I could not see the settings on my digital.

And here is a picture I took in the dark of some of @cro's collection of cyans in his bag: This was taken in complete darkness with my flash on the macro lens, so I was not able to show how many he clipped from the mulch which were still lying inthe bottom of the baf.

enjoy the images.

Well as I noticed, @cro's pellicullosa images are better than the ones aI took.
I shouold mention that @cro and i set out to find this mushrooms. They were not something we just happened upon. WE knew where and when and how they grew. However, we did not get to a good clear-cut where we normally would have found large colonies. Remember that this mushroom frows by the tens of thousands.

Although I have posted images of them in the past, i want to repost a few of them from my site to here so one can see that what we found was miniscule as hell. But we were happy to find them. ANd remember it was @cro who found most of them and poiinted them out to me to verify.

I would like to mention that when yuou hit the right clear-cut, these shrooms of colonies run in veins every four or five fett to your left and right of you and extend in front of you for u hundreds of yars. Usually five times thicker than seen inthese fotos from 1979 and from the year 2001.

mj

Now here is the missing image from above which I took of some of the shrooms @cro picked with scissors so as not to ruin the mycellium in the ground. WE were walking downt he sidewalk inthe dark when i ask to take a shot of some of his shrooms so he tilted the bag and a few came forward so I snapped this with my camera. Thought i posted it above but it was not there.
so here it is.

So whats the story on Psilocybe pelliculosa? Anything spectacular about them? How are the in comparison to Cyans for potency. Also, are they a common species in clearcuts or they centered mainly in the san juans? Sorry for all the questions but I like the challenge of finding new 'fun' species...

Well here are some pics of them layed out with a size reference. As you can see they are a rather small mushroom. From what MJ told me (I haven't had the chance for a bioassay yet) they have a potency being roughly equal to cubensis, so not quite as strong as the other woodlovers but they pack there punch in numbers. We obviously didn't find the goldmine but apparently, when you stumble into the right clearcut, they will grow by the pounds making up for anything lacking. It is also supposed to be a nice mellow trip much like Libs.

Pics didn't turn out all too well but here ya go:

peace - @cro

Hey @cro, let us know how the trip is on these compared to Cyans. Heck maybe even do a trip report.

Shroomed in the San Juans on Orcas Island.

Never found any magic shrooms there. Uese to hold annual shroom symposiums at Camp Okila on Oircas. Annual fall group and no magic shrooms anywhere.

Pelliculosas take a half of fresh ounce to an ounce for a good high, 30 to fifty or more shrooms.

When you blow up the bottom image you CAN SEE THE STRIATE MARGIN AND THE HYGROPHAOUS COLOR CHANGE AS THE SHROOM DRYS.. USUALLY THEY ARE A LIGHTER BROWN COLOR COMPARED TO
THE YELLOWISH TAN IN THE IMAGES.

Shit, I hate that capital key.

Kinda fried and am doing this in the dark.

Yes the Pelliculosas yield about 10-12 doses per dried ounce. 3/4 fresh.
