Species that will fruit off of grains?
    #1513523 - 05/01/03 11:30 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

What are some species that will fruit directly off of grains, and grow similarly to cubensis?

I believe Pl. djamor will. That stuff will fruit off of anything. Are other Oyster strains like that?

What about:

Stropharia ruguso-annulata
Coprinus comatus
Agaricus species

Or any others?

Those will all fruit on grains?

What is the difference between "Casing optional" and "Casing not required"?

species for wich a casing layer is not required will not realy benifit from one, species for wich a casing layer is optional can be fruited without, but would show better results with one.

i verry much doubt that all of those wil fruit from grain, that is merely a figure from TMC showing casing rewquirements for the species covered in the book. it bears no relevance to your question.

All the oysters will fruit off grains.

Agaricus bisporus will fruit off grain if cased with an unsterilized casing, but it is tricky.

I fruited shiitake off of a grain based mycobag, so thats another possibility.

Basically, anything that will pin on agar will fruit off of straight grains.

Hey Workman. Long time, no see !

What about SRA? I'm particularly interested in that species. How does it perform on grain?

I have been unable to get primordia formation on agar, with my isolates. 2 from spores, and 1 from clone.

It seems that Oyster species are the closest to cubensis as far as growth parameters. At least on grains and straw. Not sure about poo/compost.

SRA should work on grains but it also requires an unsterile casing. It won't be easy and I have never heard of anyone doing it.

I am looking at Agrocybe aegerita as a cubensis substitute. It fruits on malt agar, is tolerant of high CO2 levels, fruits at room temperature and kinda looks like a cube. I am working with a donated culture so I hope it was labeled correctly.
