Say I wanted to home-grow some mushrooms as a part-time hobby to deliver to specialty gourmet markets. What species fruit well and would give a good dollar return on investment?

Some people grow oysters and sell to thier local restuarants. You might realize a small profit, you gotta enjoy it as a hobby.

Reishi available here for $14 for 4oz:

IMO from what I've read on reishi, there is a long fruiting cycle.
Good luck

If you're up for a challenge, look into Agaricus blazei, and look hard.
these mushrooms go for quite a large sums of money as they have been found to contain very promising anti-cancer polysaccarides.
have fun. .uni

shiitake are nice if you can find the right outlet. i haven't grown them yet but friends of mine have. i went to buy some at the supermarket last week and couldn't believe how high they where, 6.50 for just over 3 oz. that's almost 35 bucks per lb and they wheren't even close to fresh.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
