Indulging vs feeling things * 1

I have recently more fully grokked the concept of indulging as depicted by don Juan in the Castaneda books.

It has mostly bypassed my full understanding in the past.  I realize now that when I indulge in certain states of mind or feelings I'm abandoning myself to them. I'm letting them take me over and control my reality. 

For instance I'm in the process of re-homing a dog that I love quite a bit.  He's not getting what he needs with me at this time in my life.  I'm trying of course to find the perfect home for him.  Everyone I've met comes up short in at least one area I consider important.  But I really need to find him a place soon.  I found myself slowly becoming frantic and then angry and then depressed.  The I woke up one morning and the first thing I realize is I had been indulging in worry about his welfare and my feelings of guilt and sadness over re homing him.  I also realized it was rubbing off on the color of my whole world and I started seeing humans as worthless and totally flawed.  I was taken over in indulging in self-importance. Thinking (neurotically) that I had to have life behave in certain ways.  Then I made that thread about Caring which many of you saw and I quit indulging.  I knew I was still concerned and worried and fearful but I refused to dwell on that aspect of the situation full time.  Within hours I was feeling much more in charge of the situation, knowing I was not in charge of anything. I was just going to do my best and accept what happens.

This in no small deal for me and something that is more than useful to me now.  Just thought I'd share this.

A shitty situation, but at least you're getting some wisdom out of it.

Seems like a whole lot of dancing around the fact that you're frustrated with the fact that you can't find a better home for the dog.  Your empathy for the animal is the root of the problem and everything else is a bunch of complicated philosophical bullshit.  This dilemma will pass once you locate a suitable owner and then some new problem will tug at your tender heart.

Some truth to what you say but that was just one example of a process that to this day has me indulging less and suffering less. :shrug:

Worst case scenario to kill the dog is if it had been exposed to prolong suffering. Of course you are sensible, but just in case.
