psyching myself out
    #15008553 -

after running about 10 miles in a race some jerk in an official's jacket  says, "the finish is just around the corner."

this unexpected information brought joy to my heart, eased the pain in my legs, and made running nearly effortless.

Around the corner I go. Seeing at least half a mile ahead, with no sign of the end, my heart fills with despair, pain surges through my legs, and I worry how I can push myself to go on for what I know must be two more miles.

Then I catch up to a hot chick, makes some conversation and suddenly despair, pain and effort are gone again.

I think this is how fear and desire create delusion - the delusion can psyche you up or out.

bingo!  Much of life is a mental game.

yeah, its amazing. i think that our basic psychological state is to seek pleasure and avoid pain. desire and fear.

i guess this extreme (extreme to me anyway) example shows that perspective alone can greatly modify where we are on the pleasure/pain spectrum.

so the conclusion which i kind of glossed over is that we are constantly modifying our perspective to avoid discomfort and pain or to get pleasure.

the great side effect of this is that perspective not only changes what we feel but what we think and even what we observe. from a rational perspective, perspective should be unbiased so as to see reality as clearly as possible, but if we are constantly (and i mean multiple times a day, even multiple times a run) change our perspective, then obviously we are constantly unable to see reality clearly.
