Is this a true story?  Cause it's a really fun read.

IF the secret works, its surely like a placebo. Thinking about the secret prevents you from being in an innocent state of visualisation (eg if you are told you have been given a placebo, you stop visualising that it is going to work)

The Secret saved my life!

Please allow me to share with you how “The Secret” changed my life and in a very real and substantive way allowed me to overcome a severe crisis in my personal life. It is well known that the premise of “The Secret” is the science of attracting the things in life that you desire and need and in removing from your life those things that you don’t want. Before finding this book, I knew nothing of these principles, the process of positive visualization, and had actually engaged in reckless behaviors to the point of endangering my own life and wellbeing.

At age 36, I found myself in a medium security prison serving 3-5 years for destruction of government property and public intoxication. This was stiff punishment for drunkenly defecating in a mailbox but as the judge pointed out, this was my third conviction for the exact same crime. I obviously had an alcohol problem and a deep and intense disrespect for the postal system, but even more importantly I was ignoring the very fabric of our metaphysical reality and inviting destructive influences into my life.

My fourth day in prison was the first day that I was allowed in general population and while in the recreation yard I was approached by a prisoner named Marcus who calmly informed me that as a new prisoner I had been purchased by him for three packs of Winston cigarettes and 8 ounces of Pruno (prison wine). Marcus elaborated further that I could expect to be raped by him on a daily basis and that I had pretty eyes.

Needless to say, I was deeply shocked that my life had sunk to this level. Although I’ve never been homophobic I was discovering that I was very rape phobic and dismayed by my overall personal street value of roughly $15. I returned to my cell and sat very quietly, searching myself for answers on how I could improve my life and distance myself from harmful outside influences. At that point, in what I consider to be a miraculous moment, my cell mate Jim Norton informed me that he knew about the Marcus situation and that he had something that could solve my problems. He handed me a copy of “The Secret”. Normally I wouldn’t have turned to a self help book to resolve such a severe and immediate threat but I literally didn’t have any other available alternatives. I immediately opened the book and began to read.

The first few chapters deal with the essence of something called the “Law of Attraction” in which a primal universal force is available to us and can be harnessed for the betterment of our lives. The theoretical nature of the first few chapters wasn’t exactly putting me at peace. In fact, I had never meditated and had great difficulty with closing out the chaotic noises of the prison and visualizing the positive changes that I so dearly needed. It was when I reached Chapter 6 “The Secret to Relationships” that I realized how this book could help me distance myself from Marcus and his negative intentions. Starting with chapter six there was a cavity carved into the book and in that cavity was a prison shiv. This particular shiv was a toothbrush with a handle that had been repeatedly melted and ground into a razor sharp point.

The next day in the exercise yard I carried “The Secret” with me and when Marcus approached me I opened the book and stabbed him in the neck. The next eight weeks in solitary confinement provided ample time to practice positive visualization and the 16 hours per day of absolute darkness made visualization about the only thing that I actually could do. I’m not sure that everybody’s life will be changed in such a dramatic way by this book but I’m very thankful to have found it and will continue to recommend it heartily.

So why do you hate the Postal Service so?

What I want to know is HOW all of this works.

It only works if you (1) have an opportunity to do something that will make you a millionaire, and (2) have the skills and the capacity to make it happen. If you are in that situation, then thinking "no, it won't work" will get you nowhere, while thinking "yes, let's give it a try" will of course increase the probability that you actually do give it a try. Simple as that. There are no supernatural "energies" involved.

I reckon the trick to making the secret work is 1) wanting/wishing for a whole lot of things, then 2) confirmation bias.

If I think about attracting a million different things into my life and then over time I get a few of those things, then I can say the secret works! ...but, shhhh be quiet about all the things I didn't get!

I think there is a sense in which confident people tend to get to get their way more often, and that's about the only kernel of truth in The Secret.  A lot of businessmen and entrepreneurs talk about how you have to "fake it 'til you make it," and that's basically all about exuding confidence.  Confident people tend to nail job interviews, have better luck attracting mates, and be successful in a whole bunch of other areas.  The Secret takes this basic psychological fact and construct some nonsense solipsistic metaphysics around it.

What really irks me about The Secret is not so much its factual claims as the fact that it's peddled as something deep and spiritual, when it's about the most narcissistic, materialistic fad I've ever seen.  They're basically telling people that they live in a Santa Claus universe, and that they should start saying "I deserve more stuff!"

Before you all cry quackery and mysticism this has a very real basis in physics. Welcome to the land of tautology. Given a set of possible events in your future light cone, if your desired end point in spacetime is within that future light cone there exists at least one path of minimal effort to that point. Anybody care to dispute that?
:trolldance:

Ironically this is the very way quantum amplitudes sum up (Feynman path integral formulation) and I am guessing this is the means by which wavefunction collapse occurs. Reality is ultimately effortless.

The reality is also that your rejection of this truth is an emotional one. You are afraid of your past actions. Consider why. Investigating this is the source of peace.

The Pattern contains everything that is, completely fixed in succession, all the minimal particles interconnected in every way that is. Every way that is is not every conceivable way, because not everything that can be conceived is manifest in the pattern."

"THE Human, you, is a miniscule but essential part of that pattern. In it lies complete fulfillment. It will never become something it is not, but it will never need to be anything else." - Wiccan_Seeker

I agree.  The problem with the Secret from what I hear is their presented evidence was faulty.

What is it with you and evidence? I think that's your only argument anywhere! Lol! Have u even read the book? It's filled with pretty strong arguments on how it works.  The evidence is in people's own experiences with the law of attraction and how it has worked for them.

Read what, the Secret or the Bible?  I don't think I've made much comment on the Secret, but I have read the Bible several times and the bible is what you and I are discussing even if a little off topic.

If you think that's my only argument anywhere then you have an obvious blind spot.  Still, in a debate forum reasonable evidence is important to get to anything resembling real wouldn't you say.

btw I have read the Secret but long ago. I remember agreeing with some of it but not nearly all of it but it's hard to remember what's in it other than what people here quote in various threads on it.

I agree with you. Evidence is important! Even if it is stupid! I'm not defending some of these religious sects, I was just implying that they do have evidence for millions of people to follow! Lol! Also, no flaming intended.

Yeah and I thought I was in another thread.:lol:

Anyway,  I think attitude has a lot to do with how I feel and feeling is the most important thing to me.
