On Cylons and Torture
    #14977224 -

So I downloaded the Battlestar Galactica series (the new version) last night and was half way into the second season when there was a scene that got me thinking.

First some background for those who've never seen this series:

It takes place during a war between humans and Cylons, a cyborg race created by humans, who rebelled against us. The Cylons are intent on the ruthless extermination of every last human. They're not interested in surrender or negotiations. Cylons were originally mechanical, clumsy, and dumb but have since evolved genuine sentience and are now almost indistinguishable from humans. They sweat, breathe, and shit, and they feel pain and emotion just like us. They even believe in god and have a rich and complex religion every bit as developed as human religion. However, they are still machines and they're tying to wipe us out.

What got me thinking is a scene where one is discovered to have hidden a nuclear bomb where it would kill a lot of people. A military interrogator is questioning him. Part of the interrogation involves severe torture.

Now this Cylon feels the pain and fear of the torture every bit as much as we would, but he's not talking and so the beatings go on. At one point, the person in charge walks in on the brutal beating and puts a stop to it, but the interrogator protests. She states that the Cylon is little more than a toaster and so there is no limit to the tactics she can employ in the interrogation.

I'm not sure where I would stand in that situation. The Cylon is in fact a machine and nobody thinks twice if someone crushes a toaster. On the other hand, toasters aren't sentient and can't feel pain or fear. Cylons can.

In the given scenario, would it be ethical to torture the Cylon or should it be entitled to humane treatment? Does the fact that it planted a bomb and won't say where or that it seeks to wipe out the entire human species change anything?

What do you think?

I think I liked the new version. Much much better that that worthless old one.

As to your question the answer is subjective depending on many factors in your life experience.  It can go either way and be justified or not. :haha:

I find it interesting that my gut reaction when one of the old Cylon models (the clunky mechanical ones) is killed is different than when one of the modern human-looking ones is killed.

And when a hot, busty Cylon female (a Nylon) is killed?

That is interesting.

In the new version I tended to feel most kinship with the  Cylons.
