Schiziod Personality Disorder
    #4205441 - 05/22/05 12:01 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

A pervasive pattern of detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of expression of emotions in interpersonal settings, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by four (or more) of the following:

(1) neither desires nor enjoys close relationships, including being part of a family

(2) almost always chooses solitary activities

(3) has little, if any, interest in having sexual experiences with another person

(4) takes pleasure in few, if any, activities

(5) lacks close friends or confidants other than first-degree relatives

(6) appears indifferent to the praise or criticism of others

(7) shows emotional coldness, detachment, or flattened affectivity

It's really hard to self-diagnose, at least for us laymen. SPD has many other symptoms including paranoia and/or hallucinations (that is, without the mushies  ). If you're really worried about it, you should consult someone who would know...

schizoid is not the same as schizophrenia
a common view is that it's arises from fears of dependency or vulnerability
geez i think most people including myself get afraid of being vulnerable/opening up sometimes

You're right of course. My bad. I checked it out more fully. Still and all, he should consult with a psychologist/psychiatrist if he's worried about it and/or it's causing some major problems in his life...

I'm schizotypal, not schizoid.

Something about intense anxiety. And actually wanting to be around others were it not for that anxiety, which gets worse with familierity.

thats why i dont like modern psychiatry.. not everyone actually enjoys those things but can still spend decent/happy life but society has to ruin it and call it "disorder" and after one has been given such label it only gives more food to the thought that theres something wrong with him. though thats only if one believes the psychiatrist or cares about what society thinks of him

ditto.  psychiatry is one of society's means to control people, period.  depressed?  let's talk about it.  think you're jesus?  thorazine.  &c  i'm not saying this control is good or bad, just that it IS control.

but what isn't?

When you say "familiarity" are you talking about the anxiety itself or people you are familiar with? I'm just trying to understand this condition.

Like, when I first meet people, it's easy to get along. After knowing them 2 months, I get pretty anxious to think about calling them. After knowing them 5 months, anxiety prevents me from calling.

I can't help it. I know it's irrational. It doesn't help the feeling go away to know it's irrational. So, I just accept it and don't become too attached to people.
