covering the straw

If a person has straw colonizing in a big runnermaid, should the person leave the lid on, or just cover with plastic? I would think you would want to leave the lib on to prevent contams, but what do other people think? I am asking becasue someone I know has the lids on, and colinization is going slow, it was inoculated from grain spawn.

i thought air exchange was for the pinning and fruiting stages only.

air exchange is always important, but not as important in incubation as it is important during the fruiting stages.

my question is: what is the difference between your freinds lid (which i assume is plastic) and just covering it with plastic???

hard plastic lid - zero air exchange.
plastic sheet with holes - some air exchange.

I told him to open the lids and leave 2-3 inches on one side to improve things. will this help?

ummmm that might cause contamination actually..... all you need to do is crack it once a day and fan it.
