    #14712271 -

I am 6 feet tall and weigh 180. I am pretty lean too. I also workout 5-6 days a week.

About as much meat as the size of one hamburger patty each day. I don't think it takes much, but I'm no expert.

If your working out and looking for gains you need to eat your body weight in protein daily. Healthy foods, protein shakes ( not the shitty walmart brand ), carbs, etc.

If you are looking to bulk up..I would recommend Optimum nutrition serious mass. You can get a 12 pound bag online for 35 bucks of quality protien and calories.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_grams_of_protein_are_recommended_per_day

For a more specific answer, you have to look for the calculator that atleast questions you about:

1) How active you are
2) Body type
3) the essential stuff like weight
4) Age

The amount of protein you are recommended to take in is not a fixed calculated value. If you ask someone directly, they will most likely give you a fixed value calculation. Look for the more scientific calculator to find out the best value.

If you find that you're expelling disturbing gas, chances are that you're taking in too much protein and may want to adjust... it may even save you money in the long run.

There's a difference between isolate and concentrate protein powders. And soy versus whey. Do some homework on those before you make your purchases. Also, check the ingredients, many tack on things like creatine when you may not necessarily want that in your diet.

Muscles are made up of 70% water, 22% protein, and 8% fat.

The follow protein calculations are only valid if you are taking in complete proteins (steaks, chicken, fish, pork, eggs) which have amino acid patterns that you need. Incomplete proteins come from grains, beans, and vegetables (vegan diet). If you are a vegan you should consume a variety of plant foods or complementary proteins. Such as beans and rice, corn and beans, corn tortillas and refried beans, or peanut butter and bread. A general rule of thumb is that combining beans or legumes with grains provides the important amino acids.

Normal protein intake for an adult should be 0.8g/kg of body weight(0.36g/pound)

A safe protein intake for an adult athlete should be 1.5-2.0g/kg of body weight(0.67-0.9g/pound)

Keep in mind that healthy fats and carbohydrates are just as important as protein. Why are they important? Because protein can be metabolized as a source of energy in a state of negative calorie balance. That is when fewer calories are consumed than are used up. When this happens, protein can not be used for your intended purpose of replacing the amino acid pool or in other words gaining muscle.

I wanted to get answers from some of the more knowledgeable lifters on this forum. Do you consider getting multiple opinions on various issues a bad thing?

You are right.

Looking up information in books and on the internet are two great sources. The 3rd, my favorite, is hearing about experiences from other people.

Combine them all and you have some really good info. That is why the shroomery rocks!

So I should be getting over 120g of protein a day. I guess I need to step up my intake. I was just eating a little over 100g a day.

You, at 180 pounds, will take in anywhere from 120-162 grams of protein.

Note: This is just a general guideline to make sure you intake enough protein. I learned this information from the NSCA's Essentials of Strength and Conditioning text book.

Get as close as you can. Thats about all you can do unless your a professional athlete getting paid to workout. As long as your eating enough calories to gain muscle mass then you will be fine.

What are you goals exactly? What kind of workouts do you do 5 days a week?

I'm just working on increasing strength and muscle mass. I lift fairly heavy 5 days a week for an hour. I also do about 15 minutes of HIIT cardio 5 days a week.

No but bashing people when they attempt to help certainly is a bad thing.  If they're wrong, correct them, don't belittle them.  It seems to be your thing though, so whatever.

I think that you may be lifting too many days a week. Honestly you will probably get better results if you lift 3-4 days a week. What kind of workouts do you do when yo lift?

If you want some advice on routines and exercise science, you can PM me. I love exercise and its a treat for me to help somebody.

IF your doing beginning strength exercises that can be a problem because squats, deadlifts, bench presses and the like work out ALOT of different muscles and working them on consecutive days doesnt allow enough time for the muscle to recover making the second day useless.
You also need to make sure you balance your protein intake with carb intake and fat intake. Otherwise you could get really sick.
