for that technique, realize Shroom Wizard lives in Florida where it is quite humid. If you live in a more arid environment, you may not succeed as he does without a terrarium.I'd try it though, if you have some humidity. Its cheap enough to experiment.

I'm currently getting a nice yield using this tek. The only thing different I did was put the casings into a large tupperware box lined on the bottom with wet perlite. Keep the lid on and fan it out and mist it with a spray bottle about once or twice a day. Don't worry about light and keep it at room temperature. Have your drying chamber ready to go because once they start fruiting you will have tons of them popping up at once.

I intentionally used sloppy procedures to test this tek for contams. I didn't sterilize anything and didn't even clean the casing containers after I bought them. The only sterilizing I did was in preparing the initial innoculation jars. I left two of the casings out and misted them twice a day per the tek instructions and noticed contams and humidity problems right away. However, the other casings that I put in the makeshift terrariums have done fine with no contam at all. I even experimented with using organic compost for the top layer in lieu of potting soil with equally good results. The only crucial factor I found to this tek was humidity.

hey, I was also interested in this tek. Spyro, You say that the crucial factor is humidity. What do you mean by that and what do you do to overcome it?Also, you suggested to place perlite on the bottom of a large rubbermaid of the casing. Good tip , do you have any more to be successful? thanks

I birthed a rather old cake using Shroom Wizard's tek but in a tupperware thingy from Walmart. I didn't sterilize the casing layers except a few pumps of 50/50 water/hydrogen peroxide. I kept the lid on it and fanned every day (I'm not trying to fruit at this point) and got some green mold. So I started leaving the top a little loose and off the side, and the mold pretty much just died off. I do lose a lot more moisture. I need to make a cheapo terrarium for it but I'm too busy right now.

Ultravision, I'm no expert at growing and this is the first time I've tried casing. As far as I know contamination may just be a hit and miss thing. I prepared ten small tupperware boxes of cased Ecuador. Two of them were a week ahead of the rest so I followed the tek instructions exactly and left them covered for a week. The top layer was nicely covered with mycellium and I took the lids off and left them sitting exposed in a closet with misting twice a day. Within a few days they had green crap gowing on them and dried out despite the misting. They soon became compost in my backyard. For the remaining eight casings I let them mature with the lid on for a week as per instructions. (I did notice less overlay on the ones with organic compost for the top layer then the ones with potting soil.) This time I put the casings into a large tupperware box that had about half an inch of soaked perlite on the bottom. The big boxes have snap on lids which I left on. This time there was no contamination and no drying out. The only conclusion I can make of this is that reasonable humidity must be maintained. Perhaps the contamination was more likely when the casing surface was dry or maybe the constant exposure to air born particles played a part. I don't know. I never used any hydrogen peroxide and only washed my hands with soap and water before chopping up the cakes. I do think that the cakes have to be totally covered in mycellium to be hardy enough to withstand being broken up for the casing. As I said before, I'm no expert and I may have just been lucky. Contamination may just be a hit and miss thing. I intentionally avoided precautions in order to test this tek. That's about all the help I can offer. Good luck.
