perlite enough humidity?
    #1469765 - 04/18/03 09:03 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

My good friends pet dogs brother ray the boxer has a 31 gallon rubbermaid terrarium. He has 1.5 - 2 inch layer of moist pearlite on the bottom of his terrarium and 1/4 - 1/2 inch of water in the bottom. It has been in there for quite some time but he is seeing no signs of humiditification. The temp in his terrarium is 73.6 F. The only sign that there is any humidity in the terrarium is the smell. Kind of a moist smell that may be coming from the water. There are no water droplets on the sides or the top of the terrarium. Is he doing anything wrong?

If that terrarium is sealed then my friend guarantees that your humidity is 95-100%.

Condensation on the inside of the terrarium is more an indicator of temperature difference between the interior and exterior of the terrarium than of humidity.

Thank you for your info. He doesnt have it completely sealed up just yet. He needs to get some silicon caulk around the top where the terrarium meets the plexiglass. right now he has milk jugs full of water holding everything down pretty good.

If the humiditiy levels aren't high enough, put a zoo-med heater under your rubbermaid container (put some "stands" on the four corners too so ya don't pinch it). This will raise the temps some, and cause the water in the perlite to exude the moisture. Mine stays at 99.9-"HI" on my hygrometer. Also, zoo-med sells two types of controllers for their heater pads, one uses a thermometer in the tank, oyu set it for a sepcific temp and it regulates the heat in the pad to keep it at that temp. Another just has a thermostat. I prefer actually the thermostat one, it's a bit more reliable, and you just learn the temp settings after a while. Hope this helps!
