Bolete ID help

Hi,

I've been finding a few types of boletes for a few summers in a row now, and despite buying books specifically on bolete identification, I am still having trouble feeling confident identifying them. If anyone can help me out, I would really appreciate it. Here is a picture I took today of a giant sized bolete, that is shaped very much like a king, but the cap is a purple-brown type color. The pore surface is an olive like shade and doesn't stain when scratched. Found it growing in mixed hardwoods.  Here's a pic:



Also, I find lots and lots of what I am assuming are bicolor boletes, but again I am not sure. They are red and yellow, usually with red caps that turn lighter, more like a brown with red tint as they grow larger. Their yellow pores stain blue fast. Here's a pic of several of them:


A family portrait of all of what I found today. The coloring on the caps gets pretty red compared to some of the others, so it may even be that I am gathering multiple similar types...I am really not sure.

i find Boletes to be pretty tough sometimes. but you first one, looks like a king to me.

where are you from, that may help narrow it down.

All these were found in northern NJ

Your last pic looks like a Bay Bolete (Boletus badius).  These vary so much though, so it can sometimes be hard to tell.  As far as I know, all smooth stiped boletes that do not have red pores are edible.  Certainly looks edible to me anyway.  Nice finds :thumbup:

It is a Tylopilus.

That rule works in California, but some of the eastern blue staining Boletus with yellow pores are toxic.

Also that rule is for the genus Boletus, not all boletes.

When I last found one with this color cap, but the base was not nearly so thick, it was indeed very bitter. Now that I am looking at a bunch of tylopilus pictures, I think you are probably correct. Thanks for the help.

See I have met one couple, man and wife, mushroom hunters while out hunting who had a bag full of the red and yellow ones that stain blue quickly, and told me they were indeed edible. However, I have read so many times that the opposite is true. It's rather confusing tbh...oh well, I will prob toss them all after taking a couple spore prints for fun tonight.

The first photo is Tylopilus rubrobrunneus.

The bicolor like things are a mixed collection.

also beware of boletus huronensis sometimes there is no blue bruising and its poisonous.
