I noticed in one of your pics that they don't need that much space in terms of depth for the roots?

did you learn that in the army? US military? Thats one of the jobs they do over in the middle east. Farm drugs.

I am growing some poppies in pots this year because I got a late start and am moving midway through the summer. About many plants should I keep for 3 large pots?

It depends on how "large" they are, meaning how wide.  Apparently, as the OP showed in his pics and replies to my questions, they don't need a lot of depth.  But I do know they should be spaced about a foot apart.

Ah I see. I probably can't grow more than two plants per pot then. How many doses of opium can get from 6 plants? I am guessing not very much, especially with my tolerance lol. Is it too late in the season to transplant some of my seedlings outdoors somewhere? I scattered a lot of seeds in the pots and now have quite a few young seedlings but obviously I need to thin them out to 1-2 plants per pot.

I was never in the army at any stage of my life, i learned to grow it from my mother who lived in Russia, Kenya, Holland and Ireland for sometime.
