Just checking mixture: HPoo, Verm, Peat, Lime, Gypsum
    #14625625 -

Ok, I'm trying a NEW substrate mixture that I've picked up from bits of everyone else.  Can someone give me a thumbs up or down?  If thumbs down tell me what I need to add or remove!  I was going to add Oyster Shell and Seaweed extract, but haven't gotten a source for those yet.

Im in a pretty humid environment so I'm not planning on a casing layer, but I'm going to try a method of layering and not putting any spawn in the top 1/2 inch layer to act as a casing layer!

I plan to put down 2/3rds of my substrate as a bottom layer and then mix my spawn (3 quart jars) in to this layer.  Then I'm going to put down the top layer of about a 1/2 inch which will NOT have spawn mixed in it.  I'm going on the concept that the mycelium will have to build up strong and break through the top layer which is sorta acting as a casing layer SORTA!!

Does everyone agree? Please correct me if I'm incorrect!

Here is my current mixture:

14 Cups Horse Manure
10 Cups Vermiculite
10 Cups Peat Moss
1/2 Cup Hydrated Lime
1/2 Cup Gypsum
1 Cup Coffee Grounds
15 Cups Water

I hope I never make quantities of mixture like that. Sounds overwhelming. Good luck!

Shit can the lime and peat and I'd mix it all without layering(this is just my opinion you can layer)and use a top layer of just sub as you were planning

Ok, thanks!!  So the lime is for a casing layer only?  How about Peat?

The lime is used for the casing layer to raise pH to prevent contamination since the mycelium doesn't colonize it. Peat moss is casing layer stuff as well.

You could add a little more gypsum if you want. 3-5% by volume is good. Also for the water content, you should simply add enough water to reach field capacity, squeezing the substrate as you go along to test it. The amount of water you will need depends on your particular materials;

Ok, so NIX the lime and peat except for casing!!  Add more gypsum! GOT IT!!!

I usually pasteurize my HPoo in a pot at 160-170 degrees and let it sit in the sink to drip dry... Then mix it up pretty well and add in my other ingredients...

I've recently been working with those ultrasonic foggers and they are great for making a fine mist and keeping thing moist and pretty even.  I put it on a timer so I don't saturate it.

I've recently automated my tubs and have some LED strips on a timer and a computer fan pulling air through a filter making positive airflow out of the tub 4 times a day 15 minutes each.

Things are going good except for the outbreak of gnats so I mixed in some Neem oil in the substrate and will be spraying with it too.

Found out about Rhododendron leaves and their tric and cobweb resistance properties so I'll be visiting the nursury this weekend to get one and mixing dried leave in my substrate as a test.

Hope all turns out well on this batch...

So Here is my new UBER Substrate Mix!!

20 Cups Horse Manure
14 Cups Vermiculite
1  Cup Gypsum
1  Cup Coffee Grounds
15 Cups Water (Or to Field Capacity)
2  Good Sprays with Neem Oil upon mixing
Several Dried Rhododendron Leaves
