No jiffy mix is just peat w/ verm and lime added to adjust the pH. Jiffy mix is the same as 50/50 just not 50/50 ratio. Now jiffy mix plus has fertalizer in it. And no jiffy mix is not soil. And as for the bottom layer I would forget it all together. I have had only contams form down there and that space might as well be filled w/ substrate.

newbie question - jiffy mix is jiffy mix or just nickname for a certain mixture? if it's a certain mixture, can some include the ammount of each ingredient?
