quick jiffy mix question

just bought some jiffy-mix made by jiffy and have never used it for casing. it is made of "canadian (eh!) sphagnum peat, horicultural vermiculite, lime added for proper ph balance, and a wetting agent". 1) what is the wetting agent? will it hurt the casing? 2) whats the best procedure for using this? do i need to steralize? 3) is there a lot of success with this product? i've had 2 casings with coco fiber turn to complete crap (see other post) so i am looking for an alternative and this is dirt cheap! thanks

I use a product with the same ingredients, but with a different name. I have never figured out what exactly the wetting agent is, but I have never had any contamination problems using this mix. I always cook my casing in my pressure cooker for 45 minutes at 15 pounds of pressure. It's better to be safe than sorry. The way I case is as follows: I lay down an inch thick layer of pure sterlized (cooked in a pressure cooker for 45 mins at 15 pounds of pressure) vermiculite on the bottom of my tub, then I add a 2 inch thick layer of mycelium (about 8 half pint jars), and then cover that with an inch of Jiffy Mix. -Grimey

I had just the opposite problem. Crashed two casings on Jiffy Mix and switched to coir. They were all twisted to one side. And I PC'd it in jars before it was applied. They seem to be doing better but still not as robust as straight verm. But with verm, when they get big, they will sometimes fall over just from the vibration of walking up to the terrarium. My jiffy mix doen't say anything about a wetting agent. So maybe it's different. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out. Free Spore Ring
