No, how could you even misconstrue anything in my post to be what your implying? If you wanna look for a deeply encrypted meaning in my post that isnt really there what I meant is fossil fuels should be put in the same legal realm as crack cocaine. Which is ridiculous but so is our addiction to this finite resource.

how is 7% such a high profit margin?

Its 3% higher then the average profit margin of any store out there which is almost double making it a high profit margin, and like I said before 7% of anything everyone depends on is a monstrous number.

sorry buddy but retail, marketing and internet services are around 19% according to fortune

Marketing isnt included in that anywhere and food services, food and drug stores, specialty retailers, general merchandisers, computers& office equipment, and electronics are all around 3%-7% which is pretty much more then half of the market. Internet services and the retailing of those services is so damn high cause there is no up keep and the staff is minimal all they do is put a toll on the use of landlines and fibreoptics.

Isn't there a Money/Economics forum on this site?

This was three years ago, don't remember if that forum was open three years ago but it seems like this would be a pretty good fit.

7% on a Product that is a Nessicary in the way our society works world wide,  Yea  that accualy is a pretty monsterous Margin, Considering the Demand will only go up,  and If you take these Profits to Create a Form of energy other then Oil based products, wouldnt be the case.

like what other form of energy?

have you seen the profit margins for other companies, food producers for instance, another necessity, should they also be free?

Quote:
Because the People who are making the Profits off of the Oil,  wouldnt wanna help invent an energy method that would Compete, with them in the oil industry,

lol... it's called diversification, if I own an oil company and people are
demanding solar, where do you think I want to start investing? I want to
go where the money goes. if my oil company also builds alternative energy
systems then how is it competing against my company. when my fingers are
in solar, wind, fossil fuels and bio fuels then how can I fail, I have the
market cornered, it wont matter if petroleum collapses because I still
have the other 3

Quote:
Think about it, Cheap energy other then the 4.20 cents a gallon,  the oil industry would go out of buisness if they created an energy source that was more like gas used to be, around 90 cents a gallon,

except what is there that's so cheap, our electric production comes
predominantly from fossil fuels, you can buy a solar array that will
produce the electricity you're accustomed to using and it'll cost you $50k
or more, before my alternative electric source has paid for it's self I'm
replacing major components.

solar water heater that's effective and efficient, around $12k and again,
never hitting that break even point

Quote:
The Price of Gas, will continue to raise, until it depletes

that's 200 years away, the fuel prices fluctuate because it's a commodity

Quote:
that 7percent is going in the pockets of the oil tycoons, and to make faster, better methods, to rape this earth of More Oil to sell.

as opposed to 30% going into the pockets of different tycoons in the 'green' energy field

Funny how you take this "profit margin" phrase and run with it, even though I never once used the phrase "profit margin". I said they had "super awesome profits", which does not really imply anything about their profit margin.

Seven percent of trillions is still a lot of fucking profit. Try telling me that it isn't "super awesome"!

services are services, not product based like retail or manufacturing,
electronics is a highly competitive market but then you have different
submarkets like manufacturing, distribution, wholesale and retail, again
the retail market earns decent profit. food and drug stores typically show
gross margins around 25% while the net is at the 6.5% listed, net being
after the shareholders are paid. Kroger Corp for instance lists a 7% net
profit and a 24% gross profit margin while walgreens shows a 29% gross
profit margin

http://ycharts.com/companies/WAG/gross_profit_margin

the long and short of it, if you dont want the company to make a profit,
dont use their products or services they at least they wont have your
money but the simple fact of the matter is that they have a responsibility
to their shareholders regardless of the industry to turn a profit and pay
a dividend. may of these net profit margins are based on contractual
obligation to pay out a certain percentage per share to the shareholders
thus reducing their net margin

And there is the biggest issue at hand when it comes to energy policy. Companies and their shareholders are only concerned about profits and generally have little to no concern for preserving the resources of the solitary planet that we all have to share. And that's just sad.

Bio fuel isn't practical, and neither is solar. People like to pretend they're standalone solutions, which is tomfoolery.

It's all about designing a more efficient grid, standardizing the electric car battery & it's swap-n-go system, battery leasing agreements, and facilities to produce and recycle said batteries. Centralize electricity production in every way you can (large solar farms, wind farms, hydo, coal, petrol, bio-fuel, or whatever) so we can just get the energy from what we have around and use it for what we need, rather than having X fuel for X purpose and Y fuel for Y purpose.

There are a lot of challenges there, but I don't think it's in the real of science fiction any more.

Do you know how much oil you would be able to buy if there was no profit incentive to drill for it?  Either none or it would cost more because incompetent wealth controllers would be doing instead of motivated money makers.

just as you claim that petroleum companies arent investing their profits into
alternative energy you make yet another generalized claim, ALL business is
about making a profit and just what percentage of them give two shits about
resources or the enviroment, you think apple cares, what about walmart, what

Probably due to my personal experiences, as I've never worked for any employer who gives two shits about anything other than profits.

I could live with that. If there was no oil being pumped, there would be no oil to burn. Day to day life would be hard of course, but like Pris says, you can manage!

No less practical than running brush lines everywhere trolley style, and I was sorta framing the "we're out of petrol" situation we'll be in in 100-200 years (or sooner!)

You're definitely not using current biofuels to fuel everybody. That's an issue of square miles. But I bet we could bio-engineer an organism that pisses petrol for us.

Even then you're right, carrying around those big huge batteries will never be the most efficient thing, but we've clearly reached the point where we could make it work. The charge time is negated by not owning the batteries and having the "gas stations" be battery swap locations. By then cars will be smart enough to communicate with the swap stations to co-operate such that they don't just run out completely.

It would, undoubtedly, be a massive infrastructure advance, and whether or not we'll ever have the resources for that at this rate is in question, too. But it could be done.
