Aluminum Foil around jars..

i was wondering.. i just use about four layers of aluminum foil with a rubber band around the jar for a lid.. is this ok???

actually what I do is get a piece of alum. foil and fold it in half so it's a square. then I put it ontop of my jar then put the screw lid from the canning jar on (without the actual disc part). and I cut the extra foil hanging down and fold it up. it's very nice and pretty.
