Agaricus bernardii, late March
    #14214310 - 03/31/11 11:13 AM (13 years, 19 days ago)

Hey everybody. Earlier this week I went for an early morning bike ride and found this beauty on a local university's land.

Here are the photos. Notice the beautiful staining. After slicing it, the mushroom stained immediately. First turning an orange-yellow then quickly fading to red then eventually to brown.

Here are my notes.

Found March 27, 2011, coastal southern California

Lepiotoid

Pileus: 6.5 cm wide, convex. 2.5 to 3 cm thick. Tan brown. Cap surface uneven, flat to slightly depressed, cracked, no squamules but with a cracked, scaly texture especially toward the margin. Cap dry and smooth. Margin is incurved.

Stipe: 3 to 3.5 cm long. 3 to 3.5 cm long. Very thick, sharply tapered to base. Staining red on slicing. Flesh is solid.

Gills: Pink, close.

Veil: Sheathlike, attached in an upward fan, strongly adhering to the stipe. Tearing concentrically and leaving parts on the cap margin.

Scent: Crimini-like, earthy, subtle, and pleasant. Brine scent subtle and requires some focusing.

Habitat: under a pine tree in a circle with grass as a perimeter. Growing in soil cased with pine needles. NOT growing from grass.

Social behavior: solitary.

Spore color: dark brown.

Visual reward: highly satisfying

It keyed out in Mushrooms Demystified as Agaricus bernardii, a choice edible! I took a spore print and hope to cultivate this beauty soon. Massive spore load  I didn't eat it because I wanted a spore print first. You know...don't kill the goose that lays the golden egg.

Sweeeet!

Some people call A. bernardii one of the best Agaricus species in terms of flavor.
