    #2428168 - 03/13/04 07:21 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

picked today when I went to spread some colonized substrate around, there were a couple fresh pins coming up as well, I'd rather have some morels, but cyans are a welcome surprise too

Same place I found a few on march 20th last year

never say never, eh?

bon apetit

Very nice finds. You should try cloning one of those and see if you can get a few patches pinning this late next season.
Are you using wood or grain for your spawn. My Azures are almost ready but there's so many damn squirrels around here I worry about it. Might need to go to wood before laying that out.

Peace - @cro

I can't believe you found those so late in the season.  Excellent!

What kind of trees do morels grow under here in the city?  When I drove east last season, it was easy, I just looked for pine trees.  But here in the city, I have no idea what to look for.

yeah, I thought of trying to get a clone, but they were pretty dried out by the time I got to them, they're already shriveled up. Cyans are a bitch to clone for me too, hard to get a piece of sterile tissue when they're so small. I'm thinking the location they're at has a lot to do with them fruiting so late though, I saw some Hypholoma aurantiaca around there as well, which I haven't seen anywhere else for a long time. As for spawn I had been using some colonized chips I grew out, but I also grew some grain spawn out from a fruit I cloned over the fall, I wrapped some up in cardboard like an envelope and ended up with this

Once I find a nice spot with some fresh chips I'll go bury it there and hope it keeps the critters out. I probly wouldn't do that for a private patch, but it might be worth a try.

Stymee: I only found morels here in the city one time, and it was just a dozen or so small ones. They were just growing in some mulch. I think there was a pine around there, but I doubt that had anything to do with it, I've heard of them growing just in mulch before.

DH

We do not have P. cyanescens in the wild. they are in man-made environments in the PNW.

Only once in over thirty years have I found this mushroom in thge woods. In Kingston, Washington in 1978 I found 18 growing three feet off of a logging road into the woods in a clear cut.

Mj

Check the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh this fall. Make a road trip to go.

I might just have to check out Edinburgh or Kew botanical gardens this year MJ. I was planning on introducing them to some nearby botanical gardens but found they use conifer chips instead of hardwood unfortunately.  :frown:
