i'm looking for some noise canceling headphones, i would be using a computer/ipod primarily. listening to mostly Pink Floyd and some rap.

Do you prefer in ear or over ear?  Would you be cranky if you had to carry an amplifier around?  Also, do you prefer higher pitched noises, do you care about mids more (think voices) or do you care about bass more.  Do you like the music in your face, or do you like to have it sound like you're in a large concert hall

I've got great mileage and quality out of a set of AKGs, but I'm not the audiophile most of the posters in this thread are, I feel like a headphone retard just skimming through here...

AKG can make some great cans, but unfortunately I am not a fan of their modern shit.  Thus, why I'm going back to cans like say the k400 or the k240 (MUST BE SEXTETT!)

No idea about Grado, but Bose is ALWAYS a good choice. May be a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Always.

wrong.

I have a set of grado 125is and a set of sr80s. I modified the piss out of the sr80s and they compare to the gs1000s I've heard.  I mostly use my dt770 250 ohms though (also have shit like re-zeros and what not), and soon I'm getting a set of akg sextetts.  I don't recommmend the dt770 or the sextetts unless you have a good amp though.  My headphone setup is computer > DAC > tube buffer > fiio e9 and the e9 is the cheap part.  If you want inexpensive but good over ears, audio technica ad700 are a good choice if you don't mind the fact that they're open.  I'd avoid grado though unless you're into modifying headphones

...what? I said I have no idea about them; how can I be wrong? -_-

Personally, I'd look at Sennheiser and Grado.  Be careful with mid-fi and hi-fi headphones, a good number of them are going to need an external amplifier and that can be a bitch if you're thinking any portable use.

yeah, look up reviews and look at the sensitivity and how many ohms.  Higher the sensitivity and lower the ohms, the easier to drive (typically).  Some are oddly still power hungry like any of the dt770 range, even the 32 ohm ones.

I recommend listening to various headphones if you can to get a vibe as to what you like, i personally am not a fan of sennheisers and only like grados for rock and nothing more.  That's why I asked what he prefers, mids, bass, highs, sound stage, etc.
