Wheat Straw Colonization
    #1409459 - 03/25/03 04:35 PM (21 years, 8 days ago)

I just started my first experiment with wheat straw. I pastuerized the straw at 170 degrees for 2 hours and hung it to dry/cool for about 6 hours. After that I spawned it with birdseed at about a 10:1 ratio. I also compressed the straw.
The problem is that it has been about a week and colonization is painfully slow. There is no visible contamination and everything smells fine. Does wheat straw just take forever to colonize or is something wrong? How long should I expect to have to wait?

Is your incubation temperature @ a steady 86F? The ratio of colonized grain could have been increased a little, but, I think you're fine. About how much (percentage wise) is the straw colonized?

I have heard of straw taking an average of 1-2 weeks using that amount of spawn. A lot of bulk substrates will take a while to colonize, depending on the amount you are using.

I would recommend next time using some manure or dung in the mixture.

My incubation temp is ~80 degrees (I can't change this). I would say the straw is about 5-10% colonized.

The people I live with don't want me using dung so that is out of the question.

increase your spawn ratio then.

possibly investigate 'alternative' dungs...

worm castings, for example.

how are you mixing your straw and
spawn?

layers or hand mixing?

a thorough hand mixing of your spawn and
substrate in front of an oven using plastic
gloves can be a good way to ensure that
your oyster mushroom spawn is evenly
dispersed throughout the straw.

this sort of process can drastically improve
colonization times over the alternative.

I mixed the spawn in by hand. It just seems to be having a difficult time getting a foothold on the straw.
And yes I know dung doesn't smell bad if properly aged, but I can't convince the people I live with of that.

How wet is your straw???? was it squeezed??? is it leaving water on the bottom of you tray???

hand mixing is not as goos as layering. and 1 : 5 would be better.

Straw was most certainly not too wet. There is no water pooling in the bottom of the tray. And the spawn was layered in as well as hand mixed. I put it down one layer at a time.

you're crazy.

afoaf of afoaf has two casings, side by
side, same substrate, same strain spawn,
the hand mixed bin with a 'frosting' layer
on top is colonizing exponentially faster
than the layered bin, also with the 'frosting'
layer.

and by frosting layer, I mean that there is
a thick layer of pure spawn on the top to
create a seal on the casing.

hand mixing = k3y

It was observed that WBS ( wild bird seed ) being so tiny, mixed with only Straw no poop, the wbs tends to fall to the bottom of the bin very easily , mixed with poop works better as the grain sticks to the mix.

If it's been this long and not much colonization, it's either bad temps, bacterial contam, incorrect water levels, insufficient gas exchange, .. .... ....

but something is wrong.

I prefer layering because you layer grain, straw, grain, straw.. and pack it down. when you mix by hand, alot of grain ends up on the bottom of the pile...

so. who's crazy now.

I checked my straw today and damn has colonization picked up. I would guess it is about 30% colonized. Damn that was fast. Thanks for all the help guys. I think things are finally going well. Guess it just took a while to get a foothold.

same here. my horse poop was smuggled home, and dried 'on the sly' in one of those long green windowsill tubs. mixed it every day, now finally a week later it looks pretty much like earth. i'll deny all knowledge - it's potting soil, isn't it?

(just gotta put sticks in it to stop the cats pooping in it !)

That what my friends wife told him. When he wants to cook up a tasty batch of straw and horse crap he has to wait until she is out of the house. Bitch.
