Vegetarianism

I'm interested in gaining insight into the health benefits of a Vegetarian/Vegan diet.

I'm not really sure where to start with the alteration of my current diet. I've already replaced hamburgers with Boca burgers and I'll probably check out some Vegetarian hot dogs and such. I'm looking to cut grease and processed foods out of my diet as much as I can.

What are some ways to start adding Vegetarianism into my diet? What the hell is tofu? and how do I eat humus?

what keeps me from eating meat is that i look at it for what it is. dead bodies! dead animals dont appeal to me and are rather disgusting IMO

I've done lots of research into this topic. What I've concluded is that vegetarianism as a moral issue is a fine stance to take. Just don't be deluded into thinking it's healthier in any way than a healthy diet that incorporates meat.

this reads so funny. do you think replacing fast food that contains meat with fast food that contain no meat is the way to go?
i'd recommend browsing in some cooking books and in the supermarket in order to cook meals that are actually decent tasting
and nutritious (like without tons of sugar, E-somethings and stuff like that). i've been cooking my food on my own since i
can remember. it's really something most people can't do anymore, sadly. okay here something you actually asked for:

Hummus is boiled & smashed chickpeas with cumin, salt, pepper, garlic, olive oil, curry, originated somewhere in the arabic world.
me and my friends make it sometimes and eat it with pita bread (the BIG ones, not those small plastic-backed white bread things,
those suck big time). sometimes we'd have some baked vegetables too, so it ends up being something like a kebab.

Tofu is a product made of soy. i think it's a bit overrated amongst vegetarians (maybe because there aren't so man alternatives)
because it tastes, to say the least, like nothing, if you don't place it in something tasty before actually frying it (or whatever)

i'd recommend something i don't know the name of in english. it literally translates to soy chunks, i'm not sure if you can
get it anywhere, but it has some taste to it and fryed they are kinda like .. well like a mixture of meat and rubber. but tasty :laugh:

I say, unless you have some moral issue with eating animals, forget being a vegetarian.
There's no reason that a healthy diet w/ meat will somehow be LESS healthy than a vegetarian diet.

I am opposed to factory farmed meats, but pasture raised animals are very healthy.  Many vegetarians/vegans are deficient in fat-soluble vitamins from butter, eggs, meat etc.  Animal products appear "unhealthy" in statistical studies because the majority is factory-farmed, processed crap.  Furthermore, people don't consume the most nutrient dense parts: organ meats.

Even farming will displace natural habitats, kill animals with farming equipment, pesticides etc.

A cow that was pastured near you is an excellent use of resources and step towards food sustainability.

Well meat has good minerals, its stupid to neglect it as a source of nutrition. I have personally experimented with being vegetarian. I tried every type of meal, i was hungry ALL the time. And i got real skinny. Some people need meat.

Fish is where it's at.

The smaller the fish the better.

Do raw food vegan-ism, but eat lots of fish, preferably wild stuff.

If your looking for health that is.

Eat greens, fruits, veggies, nuts and fish/fresh non-farmed mollusks like clams/oysters.

I just don't understand why meat can't be incorporated into a diet like that? I consider fish to be meat, but I eat a lot of fruit, veggies, whole grains, and nuts, but I also looove lean meats like fish, chicken, lean cuts of beef & pork....
It's delicious, and nutrient rich. I feel like people who choose not to eat meat are just up on a high horse and feel superior to us cavemen meat-eaters

there are multiple explanations for vegetarism, and i dont think anyone feels like "up on the high horse". my roomy just
doesnt like the taste, for example, and is vegetarian (even no fish) for like 15 years (being only 21 now). other things
are that meat is to almost 100% factory farmed (google & youtube will tell you whats wrong with that) and one might
even argue that you can't, from an ethical position, deny that animals have the right to live and not to be slaughtered
for our well-being. attacking vegetarians for being vegetarians is idiotic, and not every single one of them is offensive
about it (like the cliché). in fact, i know a lot of vegetarians, and literally no one is like that to meat-eaters.

i actually understand the whole "high-horse" attitude. ive seen it many times. ive actually been guilty of this myself at times. shit, i will not even go out with a girl that eats meat. its the #1 complete deal breaker!
also, i refused to be called a vegetarian. i hate that label. i tell friends and family "i just dont eat dead animals"!

as far as animals having the right to live. well that cool and all, but  plays no part at all in my decision. i just look at it as an added bonus

I believe that the most healthy vegetarian diet is more healthy than the most healthy non-vegetarian diet.  However, this is a fine line and fairly pointless.  I agree with your basic premise... just because you go vegetarian does not mean that you are eating healthy.  I have seen some vegetarians that have horrendous diets.  Likewise, just because you eat meat does not mean that you are eating unhealthy.  (This sentiment is coming from a vegan.)

Common fallacy.  The amount of B12 required for a healthy diet is minuscule.  There are versions of nutritional yeast that contain non-animal sources of B12.  If eating healthy, the vitamin issue is not an issue.  Again, it all about a healthy diet which has little to do with meat or no meat.

Not true.  There is nothing that forces some people to require meat in order to survive.  Humans can, and do, survive on meat/animal free diets.

that was a very accurate post!

i know tons of unhealthy vegetarians. the usual symptoms are paleness, lack of energy, and over sensitive to cold temps.
my very fist attempts at being vegetarian (16-17 years old) failed miserably. i always developed extreme lack of energy around the 5-6 week.

my latest and last attempt was completely different and i have never looked back. what i was doing differently this time was actually eating healthy (mostly raw foods) and drinking fresh vegetable juice daily.
i am a huge fan of green juice! :thumbup:

ive gotten so many compliments on how healthy i look lately, i love it! ive been feeling better than when i was younger as well!

yeah, raw foods are time consuming, but worth it IME!

That's exactly how i feel. Now that i've been on the raw food diet and been around 80% raw, i simply cannot go back for sheer lack of better word; you feel like a rock, static and lacking mental clarity.

Do you use a juicer/machine or do you manage getting the juices out with some other sort of method?

I've been drinking chlorophyll extracted from alfalfa sprouts over the past few days and I feel like a fucking GOD. Now, I want to move onto juicing other veggies but quality juicers are pricey as hell. Any suggestions?

My stance on this has evolved over time. My conclusion to this date is that a plant based whole food diet is the natural foundation of a healthy human being. Plant based doesn't mean only plants however, so don't let it be confused with that. A plant based diet may incorporate meat, but it uses meat as a supplement, not as a basic source of nourishment. I think Western culture in particular has gotten it all backwards by viewing animal products as a foundation of nutrition, almost as if vegetables on the dinner table are just a supplement on the side dish next to the main course of turkey in the middle of the table (for example). People in general also eat FAR too much meat than necessary. Very small amounts are enough. The diseased effects of overeating on society as a whole are no secret.

No, sorry but you're completely wrong. I spent  hundreds of hours researching this. The only book you need to read is Weston Price's "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration"

of all the primitive societies he visited, NOT A SINGLE ONE WAS VEGETARIAN.

The ones which ate the most meat were the healthiest.

two things i learned in statistics:

1. you don't conclude causalities from correlations. (--> neither the primitive societies
nor the simultaneous refination of flour/sugar and health say ANYTHING about health
being caused by those things. for the latter, there are other confounding variables
related, for example the rise of medicine i suppose)

2. if you compare intercultural relations (like those who eat the most meat are the healthiest)
you can't drag that correlation onto different people in one culture. it just doesnt work like
that and the mechanisms are way too complex to do that.

this, by the way, has nothing to do with the topic. it's plain statistical theory.
