linux mint help s-video driver???

im using linux mint julia. have a radeon x800xt video card that has 2 dvi and a weird port i can hook up s-vid or RCA video chord (comes with converter wire)

anyway i want to be able to use the s-video to hook to my tv but with my tinkering i cant figure it out. i had teh ati GUI interface but said i did not have a driver or something so would not open. anyway im pretty newb with linux so if anyone could walk me through exactly what to do. i tried ati pdf to install drivers and only managed to fuck up openGL so xbmc and window wiggle wouldnt work anymore for awhile...

worst part is i cant get my xp to recognize the linux disk so cant transfer my files even with that fs-driver or other progrmas..

Thanks so much, i really dont want to have to transfer everything to a new hard drive then back again with FAT

Are you using a laptop?

I have never needed a driver for s-video function to work, and I don't think one exists!

If you are using a laptop, there is probably a key combination that will switch your video from the laptop screen to an external device (ie: your tv). All the laptops I have tried have only one video output at a time - you just have to switch it.

Desktops are a different beast, though in my experience they are easier. Try plugging in the tv to the video card, turn the tv on, then turn the computer off and back on. It should detect that there is a tv attached to it.

Note: Radeon has crappy linux support. ATI makes their drivers closed-source, and doesn't tell the linux people anything about them. Go with a GeForce...the linux driver support is actually good!

desktop. its a weird s-vid looking plug in in the video card which you plug a converter cable to a s-vid and a rca video out. hard to explain

ive tinkered withplgging it in and out at different times but ill try and only plug in the tv and restart. thanks

There's a bunch of issues:

install ext2 driver in windows XP, it will mount ext3 volumes (you're shit out of luck on ext4 though)
install ntfs-3g in mint to access ntfs with read/write.

the svideo thing is going to be solved in xorg config; if you've installed the ATI binary drivers, they will show up if you invoke `lsmod`.  If they are there, boot with the tv on, cable connected, then use ATI's config utility to attempt to push video the the tv via tv-out.

edit:also be sure that you're using the cable it came with, not one that "fits" you had around.  just in case.

I only know of its ext4 support because I just had to use it!
